Word and TextEdit apps crash when opening files in iCloud

I am using a MacBook Air and have saved some files in iCloud.

When I open a MS Word or TextEdit file saved to the iCloud the Word or TextEdit app crashes immediately.

Files that are saved to the local drive will open with the apps.

I suspect it is a corrupt file saved to iCloud that is causing the problem, but how can I identify the corrupt file?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Sincerely,

Chris

Actually, the issue started after Word was updated.

1. After the issue began, Word and all of the associated .plst and preference files were completely deleted. The most recent version of Word was installed again.

The new version of Word for Mac 2016 did not resolve the issue.

Second, the Mac was restored to an earlier point from a TimeMachine backup, but this did not resolve the issue either.

The problem is that opening ANY Word document (.docx) on my iCloud drive causes Word for Mac 2016 to crash.

I suspect one .docx file might be the cause of the issue, but there are thousands of .docx files.

In the past, I had this exact same problem with the TextEdit app for Mac. Opening a text file (.txt) that was saved in my iCloud drive caused TextEdit app to crash. I only had 10 .txt files with nothing important saved there, so it was easy to delete a few .txt files and the issue was resolved.
