Q: Setting up a home Network
I have a Macbook Pro (circa 2012) 15" and are about to purchase a second Macbook Pro. Current one has 500gb storage capacity. I currently have about 4tb floating around on various 'waste of money' external hard drives. The ports on Macbook Pros do not allow for easy transfer and connectivity to most external hard drives no matter what their cost. I have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on them and many take hours to even be discoverable despite only being connected hours before. I have sat with Apple and tried to troubleshoot this for days and their answer was buy another brand of EHD. I currently own WD ones of varying models. There are a few issues I have had with hard drives though.
1. Connectivity (delays in being discoverable, slow access)
2. File transfer ridiculously slow
3. I do not want my files stored on a web based Cloud
The Macbook Pro that I have contains two Thunderbolt ports, three USB ports, and one HDMI port. Most hard drives I have found require Ethernet connection, USB to mini USB etc. I have not found any that have a fast connection option.
Does anybody have any experience of understanding of what is a reasonable option here? To allow at least two Macbook Pros to connect and access the same files? Something that has a large amount of data capacity (8+TB)? And a reliable and fast file access/transfer rate?
Thank you.
MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)
