iPad

Q: Iphone 7 plus will not restore from back up from iPhone 6. says its not compatible with the os. not sure how to get my new phone to actually be my phone

Just got my new iPhone in the mail today. trying to set it up and come to find that my phone can not be restored from backup from my iPhone 6 due to it not being compatible with the iPhone 7 plus. not sure how to do this. i have tried downgrading firmware and everything. Nothing seems to help. Also tried doing it form the cloud it just doesn't let it happen. Anyone have any ideas?

I am using the latest iTunes on my mac book pro.

What is the exact message that you are getting? What iOS was running on the iPhone 6? What OS are you running on the Mac? What version of iTunes are you running?

when i go into iTunes on the computer the backup just doesn't pop up. when i try and do it through the cloud on the phone it says its not compatible. using the most current iTunes. not sure on the version but i know theres not an update for it otherwise it would have downloaded already or it would show me having an update. iPhone 6 was running the 10.1 most current iOS for it.

OK, so again, I need the exact message you are getting - word for word. Also, I need the OS your Mac is running. You may have the latest version of iTunes that your particular OS version can run, but that doesn't make it the latest version available.

So, to find out what OS you are running, click on the  then on About to see the OS version

To find out what version of iTunes you are running, open iTunes, click on iTunes then About

mac os sierra 10.12
itunes 12.5.1.21

there is no error message when doing it through itunes. just the backup isn't an option in the list.

Sorry - what list are you referring to? And how is that related to the title question about something saying it's not compatible with the os? I'm not understanding what you are attempting to do, and what you are seeing when you do that.

When i tried to restore the iPhone 7 from the cloud it gives me that message. says its not compatible with the os from the iPhone 7.

Not even using the computer at all for the restore this is the message i get. "IOS 10.1 required". then under that it says no iCloud backups are compatible with the version of iOS. i have 10.0.2. i downgraded it hoping that it would fix it it did not.

The only way to restore an iCloud backup is to start with Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.

Have you done that?

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support

Your iPhone 7 should be using iOS 10.0.3.

yeah thats the only way you can get it. my phone is just sitting on that page right now of the back ups.

OK, that's why I needed the message. That indicates that the backup you made was from a device running the Beta software, is that correct? If so, then you won't be able to use that backup on any device that is not running that software.

Oops ... iOS 10.1 is in the beta testing stage right now. Are you using iOS 10.1 on either of your iPhones? If so, you have a problem.

yes i have it on my iPhone 6. i take it theres no way to get back to just 10.0? or is it just stuck in the cloud obyss?

Again, that is why the message was important. You cannot use a beta backup on a device that is not running the beta.

You have played with fire. It sounds like you've used beta software for what should be a production assignment - saving information from an iPhone to transfer to a new iPhone.

Further, asking how to proceed with beta software in this forum would violate your non-disclosure agreement.
