TV is showing black screen when I connect my Macbook Pro to Apple TV via AirPlay, but I can still hear the sound. Just no picture.

As the title says, When I turn on AirPlay on my Macbook Pro, it connects to my Apple TV.

However, the TV shows a black screen. My Macbook is working normally, I can see everything on its screen and function normally, it's just that the TV is not showing anything, just a black screen.

BUT, I can still hear any audio through the TV, that is playing from my Macbook.

So I know it's connected for a fact. I just don't understand why the screen is black. Please Help!

Having the same issue. I can mirror from my iPhone 7 with no issues. However, trying to mirror (any option as noted above) from my Mac Book Pro 2016 (fully updated) to my Apple TV 4 (fully updated as well) fails.

On the Mac I can see the Apple TV being discovered (but goes in and out). When mirroring the TV screen goes blank, no video is actually being shown on the TV. Yesterday I got audio coming out, today, even that part failed.

I'm trying to mirror from both Apple core apps (OS), and well known apps, that "should" work.

Hi. I also have this problem all of the sudden (worked for months previously). MacBook Pro 15" 2015 running Sierra 10.12.6. I tried the soft reset and it cleared it up for about a day. But now it is back. I have deleted any possible screen sharing programs (including GoToMeeting just to be safe). We have three Apple TVs in my office and I am the only one with this issue, everyone else in the office can connect to them all just fine.

I know the first post here is 12 months old, but I had the same issue today. The situation was that I was to run a group discussion (using my MacBook Pro) at a venue where there is an (old) Apple TV, and I just got a black screen as per the question. I went back home and tried again with my own home Apple TV and same black screen. After following all the advice and instructions, still no success.

In my case, I left home without powering off my MacBook, I simply closed the lid. Again when I left the group discussion I simply closed the lid. After fiddling around for an hour or so, Computer Problem Solutions came to mind - I totally "Powered OFF" and restarted.

All worked fine - it appears that there may be a bug where your previous Apple TV usage details are saved, and unless you power off between sessions, particularly if changing from one Apple TV to another, you PC screen will not "mirror" via the Apple TV.

Hi Steve - see my reply below. Completely power off as you move between one Apple TV and another. I to have a 15" MacBook Pro running Sierra 10.12.6

As an aside, I feel that my same problem started when Apple TV software was upgraded to the new 4 digit login? Also, both of the Apple TVs I use are 3rd Gen A1427s (Early 2012) or older. May not be an issue on later models.

I’m having the same issue, but I’m using lightning cable. Problem is only with Hulu. Seems that they are blocking the mirroring. Commercials play just fine, then the shows go blank. I did call Hulu, and they told me to reset network settings, delete/re-download app, check cord... nothing worked. Sadly, I may just cancel my subscription. I’m using iPhone 6 pl

Hi. Have you tried this with generic content, like YouTube or Vimeo? Some providers block AirPlay of their content for reasons of their own. Also, you should be aware of the different AirPlay modes, as described below.

Video AirPlay works in two modes. Basic AirPlay just sends the video URL to Apple TV which then streams it directly. This usually works best since there's no double transmission. You're using basic AirPlay when the video player on your device goes black and says "This video is playing on Apple TV". On a computer, you do this using the AirPlay icon that appears in the controls of a screen video player object, in the browser or other app. On iPad or iPhone, use the AirPlay controls on the right hand pane of the iOS 10 Control Center, or the AirPlay icon in the video player.

The other mode is Mirroring, which generates an H.264 video stream from the device frame buffer and transmits it over WiFi to Apple TV. This video compression inherently limits resolution, and may have trouble with fast motion. When you put the iPad or iPhone video player into full screen mode, mirroring automatically switches to basic AirPlay, and it seems to be impossible to prevent that from happening. On iPad or iPhone, mirroring is on the left hand pane of the iOS 10 Control Center. On a Mac computer, you access this mode from the AirPlay icon in the main menu bar. It lets you mirror the main display, or create a new display, extending the desktop. But remember that the data sent to the Apple TV is always being converted to a live video stream. Actual display frame buffer pixels are not transmitted, as they are to a directly connected monitor.

I have the same problem with my Macbook Pro, but not with iPad. Yesterday my MacBook Pro shut down and rebooted by itself. It is since then that I get a black screen on the TV when connected via AirPlay - always use "Mirror Built-in" but same with "Mirror Apple TV" and "use as a Separate Display". As with DenzelOntario I can hear the sound through the TV. This is regardless of whether I am trying to connect a video or simply see my computer desktop.

Airplay also switches off when the Screen Saver starts.

Given iPad works with Airplay I can only assume that something has changed in the shutdown/reboot on my Macbook Pro 13inch, Early 2011 running 10.12.1. Can't see that there was an actual update of OS

Same problem, driving me absolutely insane. Airplay from MacBookPro to my Apple tv. Never had a problem with it until a couple weeks ago when all the sudden playing video stopped working (black screen) whilst pumping out the audio just fine no problem. I just can't figure out what is causing it. Nor fix it. Used this feature almost every single day and then "poof" not working. I've gone through the usual steps (mirroring to apple tv display, tried to make the apple tv the dominant screen, etc etc).

Still looking for a fix.

TV is showing black screen when I connect my Macbook Pro to Apple TV via AirPlay, but I can still hear the sound. Just no picture.
