Apostrophe issues with iOS 10

I use the default keyboard and ever since I upgraded to iOS 10 I've noticed a strange quirk with apostrophes on all my devices (iphone 6 and 4th gen ipad).

In prior versions if I switched to the numbers/symbols keyboard pressing the apostrophe key would immediately switch the keyboard back to the qwerty keyboard. After iOS 10 it reverts to qwerty after pressing it twice, which makes no sense. Double apostrophes are not at all common, if they're even used in English and this is the only key this happens with. The numbers/symbols keyboard remains active regardless of the number of times I press ot but if an appstrophe is the second or later number/symbol key pressed it takes me back to qwerty.

Is this an oversight? Is there some way to enable the prior functionality? Or is this another one of iOS 10's "improvements" that actually makes things less efficient?

Hello Jon,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. I know having an issue with the keyboard on your iPhone and iPad is not what you expect. Based on what you stated, it seems you may be having issues with the keyboard not switching back to the "qwerty" keyboard after tapping the apostrophe key as expected. I tested this on my iPhone 6s and did not see the same behavior, so I would try either restarting your iPhone or resettings the settings. Restarting your device can help as the shut down and start up process is important to keep the iOS software running properly:

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

The next step is resetting all of your device settings back to the factory state. Keep in mind this will revert all settings that you've customized or changed (including things like your Wallpaper and alarms). This means you may need to reconfigure some of those settings including network settings (so be sure you have your Wi-Fi password handy).

Before we do this step, it’s always a good idea to be sure you have a recent backup of your device. You can learn more about backing up your data and settings here:

About backups for iOS devices - Apple Support

When you’re ready go to Settings > General > Reset and choose "Reset All Settings."

Reset iPhone Settings - iPhone User Guide

Cheers!
