Q: iPhone email not opening

iPhone 5S (work) - email issues; cannot open individual emails unless the email is one within a thread.   I read somewhere about issues with email for users with an apostrophe in the last name.   This is on my agency iPhone 5S operating iOS 10.02.

    Then undo the organize by thread in email settings.

    I am guessing I did not explain the issue well.    The only emails I can fully open are ones within a thread.   If you were to send me an email I could not open it.   If you sent me and two other people an email and one of them replied to you, I would have to open the reply to see the initial email.      I can see the emails in my mailbox, who they are from and the subject, however when I select the actual email it will not open.
