ipad 2 disabled. try again in 23,736,968 minutes

I want to recovery my iPad 2. It had broken screen for long time and was recently repaired. I could not remember the password and it went into Disabled mode. I have tried to recover it with iTunes 12.5 and it does not seem to work. I hold home and top button - wait for computer to ask if I want to access it. ITunes asks if I want to access it. I say yes, then it tell me respond on the iPad. I cannot get the iPad to go into recovery mode. What am I doing wrong?

Hi

Turn iPad off

Connect lead to USB on your PC

Press & hold just the power button don't let go

Connect lead to iPad keep power button pressed down until PC sees ipad

Then wait for restore you may need to do this more than once before it works.

I keep trying. It seems to just go to the Apple Logo - that goes off - comes on again. Then eventually goes to the iPad disabled screen. I have tried 3 times. Seems that its the same whether I hold Power or Power + Home.
