Q: DDNS on AEBS 4th gen, v7.6.7

Hi.

I had configured this AEBS for dynamic DNS by setting Internet > Domain Name and then Internet > Internet Options... as: Configure IPv6: Link-local only and checked "Use dynamic global hostname" with the correct hostname and the tsig info I was assigned for user and password.

Does this work any more? I found another post that seems related: AirPort Disk - Remote Access (3 Methods)

This seems to say that the firmware updates disabled the function.

Regards,

-Paul

Please look over this support document from DDNS

    https://help.dyn.com/airport-and-time-capsule-with-dynamic-dns/

You might want to check with DDNS to confirm.

So can I get the capability back by returning the AEBS to factory defaults? If I do that, can I still use the NAT-PMP setup I have?

Good doc, thanks very much for your help, Mr. Timmons.

I haven't used DDNS in 3-4 years, but the document seems to clearly indicate that DDNS is not compatible with AirPort Utility 6.x versions and any recent firmware versions of the AirPort routers.

So, your Mac would need to be running a 5.x version of AirPort Utility (that would mean Leopard 10.5.x or Snow Leopard 10.6.x) and the installed firmware on the AirPort would need to be 7.5.2 or earlier, so the 7.6.7 firmware that you are using now would not be compatible at all.

Hopefully Tesserax will see this post and provide some additional information.

For most users,  Method 1.....Back to My Mac (BtMM).....is by far the easiest process to set up for remote access. Unfortunately, it is somewhat finicky and not all that reliable in my experience.  I've used Method 3......Port Mapping....for a number of years with almost flawless results....even while traveling internationally.

I think that's the complete picture. Since there's no web admin interface on this router, even my Airport Utility won't work with it. Okay. You saved me a ton of time!

I have restored the configuration after many tries to get rid of the dynamic host under Internet > Internet Options. My problem is that if I uncheck the option, save and try to update, a dialog appears to review the settings: "Advertising a service globally using Bonjour requires a global hostname."

What can I change, elsewhere to get rid of the dynamic host? Is there a way to import the original configuration again without either of: "IPv4 Mapping", "DHCP Reservations" or "All other settings"?

To clarify, the DDNS-provider (DynDNS) I used for the option's example in the article, dropped support for the newer AirPort base stations and AirPort Utility. It wasn't meant to say that the AirPort base stations do NOT work with DDNS at all, but I have not had an opportunity to verify this with any other DDNS-providers out there to date.

"Advertising a service globally using Bonjour" is referring to the WideArea Bonjour feature (aka, Apple's version of Zero Configuration Networking over the Internet) in the AirPort Utility. This is different than DDNS but they can work together.

To "disable" Wide Area Bonjour, there are actually two areas that this could be enabled on the AirPort base stations:

    1. Disks tab > Share Disks over WAN (version 5.x of the AirPort Utility only)
    2. Base Station tab > Allow setup over WAN
    3. Unchecking either or both of these options should turn off the warning dialog.

Is there a way to import the original configuration again without either of: "IPv4 Mapping", "DHCP Reservations" or "All other settings"?

You can export & import the base stations configuration settings from the AirPort Utility. However, you cannot selectively pick which settings that you can export or import. It's basically "all or none."

I'm sure I don't quite get the whole picture, but any info help.

Ha, and your assuming that we do? There is certainly a lot of technology magic that goes into how networking actually works. It's all based on the OSI model. If you really want to get a feel, I would suggest giving the following The TCP/IP Guide a look. You'll find the topics covered either intriguing or something to avoid at all costs.
