Error after internet recover format and attempt to reinstall

I have a Macbook Pro late 2011. I wanted to format the hard drive and start over with a fresh clean reinstall. I backed up my docs, photos etc to an external drive and rebooted while holding down option+command+R to get to Internet Recover. My first step was using Disk Utility to format the hard drive, which I did using Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Next I went to the Mac OS X Utilities screen, and selected "Reinstall Mac OS X". Even though I had a later version of Mac OS on the machine, it tried to reinstall Lion. That's no problem, I would just update once it reinstalled.

This is where things go awry. After downloading the files, I get a message saying that an error occurred, attempt to reinstall again. I have gone back and reformatted my drive several times, even ran it once with a higher level of security. I continue to get the same error every time I attempt to reinstall.

One thing that I've checked was the "Verify Disk" button in Disk Utility. There is a message that says "Invalid Disk Label @ ############: cksum mismatch", but at the end of the details it says "The volume appears to be OK". I'm not sure if this is related, but I can't figure out what else to do.

Hi!

If you are having issues with installing OS X after formatting the drive, try starting up in normal Recovery mode (Command + R) then reinstall OS X without formatting the drive. I would connect the Mac to the internet via ethernet cable for quicker download of OS X.

How to reinstall macOS

This should allow you to reinstall Lion without issue. Thanks for posting in Apple Communities. Have a great day!
