You are right to raise the point in these days of more and more clever fakes but Apple no longer uses the serial number for guarantee coverage. The receipt (or a copy in the case of on-line) is your proof of purchase. As hardware, it should carry a limited guarantee for 12 months.

What strikes me is that as the prices are likely to be the same for a new item yet you chose to buy from Amazon instead of Apple. So was it a brand new item in sealed box or used?

Then best to go back to Amazon if you are unhappy with it. I know it is a nuisance returning goods to them but that's what happens when you use their services.

But ... If you have successfully paired it with your machine and it is working well just go with it. In a sealed Apple box it is very unlikely to be fake but if it ever proves to be so, Amazon would have no choice but to take it back for a full refund.

Ask yourself, would they want to be seen trading in fakes.

But the reason for the original question may not have been revealed. Are you having problems with it. If not, and you're only troubled by the news reports, I would forget them (but buy from Apple next time).
