Follow the steps in the following support articles, as appropriate.
If your iPhone is locked to a different carrier than the one that you want to use, you will need to contact the original carrier to arrange for it to be unlocked. Note that the carrier may require a minimum period of paid service before they will unlock the iPhone:
- If you can't activate your iPhone - Apple Support
- How to unlock your iPhone for use with another carrier - Apple Support
Note that Apple now sells iPhone 7 in the US with a SIM-free option, which may better meet your needs.
