Install Mac OS in VirtualBox

I have found Mac OS can be installed in VirtualBox technically. Is that legal? Can I buy the license?

MacBook, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

The process of converting the downloaded Mac OS X installer.app in to an ISO used to be fairly easy but since Mavericks has been more complex. Since about the only legitimate scenario that requires such an ISO is VirtualBox this is not a well discussed topic.

However see this http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/293481-how-to-create-a-bootable-iso-from- the-mavericks-installesddmg/#entry196257…

It could indeed might be likely that subsequent different versions of OS X i.e. Yosemite, El Capitan and Sierra might require slightly different scripts.

I did start writing a tool to do this for people but moved on to other things.

If you are running VirtualBox on a real Mac then it is legal to run a virtual copy of macOS as a virtual machine. As you would be doing this on a real Mac it is covered by the Macs license for macOS. Under no circumstances is it legal to try running macOS in VirtualBox on a none Apple Mac computer.

Note: While VirtualBox can indeed run a VM running macOS it is very poor at doing this compared to either VMware Fusion or Parallels Desktop. This is partly down to Oracle stubbornly refusing to create Mac guest software which means for example clipboard support, shared folder support and support for different video resolutions are all lacking. It also typically will crash if you try and add more than one CPU core to the Mac VM and its video performance is awful compared to VMware Fusion or Parallels. It is therefore worth every penny it costs. (Zero.)

Now John ... I have VB 5.1.8 running on El Capitan on a 2011 Mac mini with 16GB RAM, and a boot SSD. The guests are stored on an external, 7200 rpm, 3.5 inch drive in a USB 3.1 Gen 2 (future proofing) enclosure.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and Windows 10 work just fine. Well, Windows 10 did until I tried to install the Anniversary update. 👿 Solaris 11 worked fine on the above configuration.

I allocate 8 GB RAM to each guest, and no more than two threads from the old Core i5. I upped the Guest video (--vram) to 256 MB. I also set an execution cap of 85% on each guest.

I have been using VB since late 2009 and it just works, with the exception of Windows 10 Anniversary update. There is profanity associated with that...
