Q: Lost Email Folders

I was upgrading to macOS Sierra when it detected that my hard drive was bad. Had new hard drive installed and while they were not able to recover data from my Time Capsule, they did recover some from the old hard drive. Now running macOS Sierra. However, I lost all mail folders with old stored emails from my old hard drive. How can I recover?

Unless you can locate the data stored in your User's Library/Mail folder or a backup, those messages are lost.

Messages stored locally under "On My Mac" exist on your Mac only unless you have them backed up.

I curious as to why they were not recoverable from your Time Capsule.

I do not understand, but when they tried to retrieve from my Time Capsule only a little data came across. I question if they went back further would they find the missing data. Right now the messages are either lost or appear as pdf files in some form in my data list. Thank you.

If you are unsure about using your Time Capsule, I would go by an Apple store if one is near you or see if there is a local Mac User Group in your area that can help you with TC to recover your data if the following is not clear to you.

You should be in the User's Library > Mail  folder

Enter Time Capsule while in the User's Library.

Go back in time before you did the Sierra upgrade.

Look in either the V2 or V3 folder for the Mailboxes folder to recover.  This folder contains the local "On My Mac" folders. If it's V3 it might be more difficult to tell which folder is Mailboxes. You might need to drill down in one of the alphanumeric folder names to find the correct local folders.

    Select Restore

    Show User's Library

The User's Library folder is hidden by default.

Select the Home folder in the sidebar.

Under View in the Menu bar select "Show view Options".

    Check Library.
