How to resolve software glitches on 10.68 after 'tidying up'

In an effort to get back some much needed space on my hard drive, even though I thought I was being careful, i pitched a lot of stuff - now I am having problems with Safari and iWork'09.

Safari (v5.1.10) will only partially load.

Keynote (v5.1.1), Numbers (v2.1) and Pages (v4.1) would not work at all. Msg I rec'd was 'check with the developer to make sure these work with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for these apps and Mac OS X.' I deleted the non working apps and re-installed them from the original install disc, only to receive the same message.

HELP, PLEASE. How do I fix all of these - and I promise to never throw out stuff again!!!

Since you are on OS X 10.6.8, and we have no idea what you have removed, here is a suggestion.

  1. Backup your files. Reapply the OS X 10.6.8 Combo Update, and all other updates offered in Software Update. This should be non-destructive to your user data, and will put back the OS X installed applications.

Move the combo update above to other storage off your Mac.

  2. Again, after the above, re-install from the retail (not trial) iWork '09 DVD, and run the Apple iWork 9.1 updater for OS X 10.6.8 to get you back to the last iWork versions for that release of OS X.

YEAH!!! I have iWork back! Unfortunately, Safari does not respond!!! Any suggestions????

I do thank you so very much for your advice - much appreciated.

And where do I go to find out if USB 2.0 will work on the newest Mini - or - will usb 3.0 work on both the newest and well as late 2009 Mini(s)? I plan on buying a new Mini in the near future - and keep the old one for both OS 10.6.8 and OS 10.8

You should now have a 10.6.8 Safari installed. When you say it doesn't work, what do you experience that makes you say that? What is going on? Have you installed all of the Software Updates?

The 2009 Mac mini is USB 2.0, and the current Mac mini (2014) is USB 3.0 (backwards compatible with USB 2.0). Apple has an event scheduled for Oct 27 that should introduce updated Mac hardware, but the details are known only to Apple as this time.

I did install the OS X 10.6.8 combo update, then ran Software Update (which stated I needed ONLY an HP update, no Apple s/w). I note that Safari is now only v5.0.5, not the v5.1.10 I had before. When I open the app, it partially loads, then I get the wretched spinning beach ball and I can do nothing with the app.. (I tried to get to 'check for updates' to no avail.) Clicking Cmd+option+escape tells me 'Safari is not responding'.

re: USB - info over my head - does your answer mean that v2 will NOT work on a new mini??

The USB 3.0 ports on the current 2014 Mac mini are plug compatible with USB 2.0 devices, so yes the older USB devices will work with their existing cables.

Now, about Safari. Here is the Safari 5.1.10 download link. Launch Safari while holding down the shift key. Then from the Safari Application menu, use the Reset Safari menu item, and check everything. Quit Safari, and launch without the shift key. Any changes?

However, considering the years of web exploits that have been unleashed since Apple stopped updating Safari on Snow Leopard, and protection in later releases of Safari, you would be better off using the last version (48.0.2) of Firefox that is available for Snow Leopard. This Firefox is only about 4 months old.

HI!

I held down the shift key and dbl clicked the Safari app (from my App folder on the main hard drive - not dock). Safari started to load, but before I could move my cursor to the reset command, the spinning beachball appeared - and there was zero response of any kind to the cursor. I tried this x2 to make sure I was doing it properly, with the same results.

Found it (by going to users > library > caches > the cache.db file). . .am VERY nervous about going anywhere near the Terminal . . . . deleted it - opened Safari with shift key held down - cursor opened the Reset Safari screen. . . .then the cursed spinning beachball appeared, not allowing me to click the actual reset button. This is getting frustrating to say the least!!
