My 2.5 GHz i5 4gb MacBook Pro is really slow.

Last year, i got this mac as a birthday gift and I got to say I regret getting it. Keep in mind I absolutely hate lag and since this is an Apple product, the same company that made the iPhone, I thought it's gotta be good. But I was wrongs, because not so long ago my mac started lagging and slowing down to a point where it acted like a 1gb computer and the only way to stop this was by closing apps and restarting but then again it comes back. Im utterly frustrated at this computer because the amount of money that went into it to get this is totally absurd. I urge anyone to please help me resolve this situation with my mac, because Im seriously at a point to throw this thing out of my balcony.

If neccesary

My memory is 498.89 GB. Where a total of 252.29 GB is available. It's a non-retina display. Also the graphics are Intel HD graphics 4000 1536 MB.

Dear Max Rockatansky,

What you are describing is just what was happening to me for very long. I am no expert, but I'd like to observe that I got some very good advice about the problem from various people who are much more knowledgeable than I: to bring the memory in my (older than your) computer up to 8 GB. And my computer still is running on Snow Leopard (10.6.8), not Sierra. I don't know whether even that would be enough with Sierra, but I certainly see a great change in speed, receptiveness and all. There may be other things to do, as well, but I shall never regret adding it. It comes at a very modest price. I recommend OWC – Other World Computing – should you decide to buy it. I decided, in the end, to have someone else (a company in New York) put it in, but I understand that doing it yourself isn't difficult. In fact, I did that with my old desktop computer, long ago.

Don't be discouraged. Macs are great machines, and I truly believe that things will come right for you.

Good luck,

Jenny

Google Chrome is eating all your CPU and RAM. Maybe you should consider a less resource hogging web browser.

Mac cleaners are not recommended. They tend to fight the operating system, and in some cases they delete things that should leave alone.

If you are actively sharing out files, this can consume your up-load bandwidth, which is typically must smaller than the down-load bandwidth. Most ISPs only advertise the down-load bandwidth, and neglect to tell you how fast the upload speed is.

You might want to consider upgrading the RAM to 8GB if possible. Current operating systems tend to want more RAM.

If you would prefer Windows, then you can use Applications -> Utilities -> Boot Camp to install Windows on your Mac, so you can get some value out of your Mac hardware until you decide to get your next Windows PC.
