Q: Exporting Wedding films

I have been getting requests for Wedding films to be placed on usb drives. Upon exporting from FXPX what would be the most sensible UNIVERSAL export from FCPX or compressor ? I see an MPEG 2 but MPEG 4 is available through handbrake and I would assume it is better? I do not want to lose resolution one they plug the usb into a 70 inch screen.

Also, if they simply want exports to accommodate their own apple set ups like TV, iPad, iPhone, etc is the APPLE DEVICE export sufficient enough as a MPEG or H264?

My export plan would be to export right out of FCPX to a MPEG 4 but I don't see that option. So currently I am exporting a MASTER FILE VERSION out of FCPX then hand braking to MPEG 4. this leads to double versions and wasted drive space. I would like to streamline the whole process and am open to hearing feedback. Thanks  TIM

right now I would think Mpeg4 is a better compression method than Mpeg2 but the quality is the same.  Mpeg2 may have better legacy support. H264 may be better suited to Apple devices, less so for Windows.

Are they playing on apple devices or smart tvs or windows systems, also USB drives if they are continually written to they can degrade far faster than any other media, if they are not being used for anything other than the video they may last longer but in comparison with not writing I dont know what the lifespan of a device used to playback would be but if it's blows out in 5 years are you going to have angry clients calling you? Also the throughput as you start putting 4K video on a flash drive is going to demand a serious flash drive to accommodate that bandwidth.

It's a good question, I'm sorry if I don't have a good answer for you.

Good points. Really lately folks have just been wanting the usb and I tell them aside form the custom printed Drives I provide to go buy a hard drive and usb and back up the files that I give you. I also tell them in 5 years when your kids get ahold of the dvd and scratch them and they don't play they are simply out of luck. thats a h=whole other story but I hear what your saying. I am trying to get them to place these on their APPLE TV/itunes library for safe keeping and of course none of us can be responsible for how the manage the deliverables etc.

THe instructions you make make sense and are appreciated.

    Thanks TIM

Share Master File and under Settings choose Computer and H264. The output is an .mp4 file using the H264 codec.

This creates a file that most devices will have no trouble playing - mac, pc, iphone, android, appletv.

In Compressor, use the "Apple Devices (Most Compatible)" preset.  This produces a .m4v file that just about anything in the world can play.  At the TV station I'm affiliated with, we have to hand out finished video work to clients who want their own copy all the time.  We've yet to have issues with this preset.

Depending on your type of audience and the prices you are charging, you might invest in a box of tasteful, custom printed or (better) engraved USB chips. Not expensive. Implies way cool things about your company.  But might not be worth the additional expense for you.
