Q: music file transfer snafu

Hi,

new iMac user (first Apple product)

somewhere between illiterate and literate computer user!

I bought a new PNY 64GB- then transferred all of my music files (music downloads- most are full albums) from my PC to my iMac (Sierra OS). Most, but not all files transferred.

for instance-

There are 10 Albums by the band Opeth, but only 4 transferred to iTunes. All of the albums are the same file type. The ones that did download to iTunes were random- they were alphabetical, chronological. . .

Then I tried to drag and drop the albums that didn't make it from my zip drive on my Mac's desktop to iTunes- but they don't show up?!

I have 3 Classical music albums- none of them transferred, except one album of a double album???

The total space of all the music files only come to 3.27GB.

What do I do to get all of the files to successfully transfer from my zip drive onto my iTunes?

Can you setup File Sharing on the PC & Mac & transfer them that way?

I'm not sure.
I already transferred the files and most of them went through to iTunes.
For some reason, some didn't, although the file types and location were the same

Some characters in Filenames/Folder names that are valid on PCs won't work for OSX & vice versa, could that be it?

That would be real weird. I have a double album from classical guitarist. Both albums are part of ther same file, Yet only one album gets onto iTunes!
All of the files play fine when they're on my pc.

If I double-click on the files on my iMac's desktop from my PNY flash drive (the ones that won't go through to iTunes) I get a message that says: "QuickTime Player can't open- then it reads the name of the musical piece.

What extension are they?

If QuickTime Player can't open an audio or video file - Apple Support

If I do control/click on the Document from the PNY then click "get info", the only thing I can find is under "kind" it says Folder. I was trying to find out what the file extension is but can't.

Does it show on the PC?

Oh, wait, on the Mac, Right click on that "Folder", see if Show Package Contents is a choice.

I'll turn on my pc to check.
On my mac (Sierra) the closest thing I get through control/click is "get info".

my pc tells me they are .wma (windows media player)

but I have to open the folder with the name of the band and then a sub folder with the name of the album and THEN right click on an individual song to see that they're all .wma.
The ones that successfully went o iTunes AND the ones that didn't make it to iTunes were all .wma.

I think you'll have to do much the same on the PC to transfer individual files to the Mac.

so you are suggesting that I upload the individual songs from my pc to the PNY instead of uploading the actual documents with the songs in them?

I figured out the problem.
The files that DID make it to iTunes were all MP3 files. The files that DIDN'T make it to iTunes are all .wema.
The problem is that I can't access the internet with my pc (that's part of the reason I bought an iMac- I wanted a new computer).

I'll have to see how I can change the files on my pc from .wma to MP3.

I didn't really like any of these solutions so I put together a simple one liner using ffmpeg that will convert the files.
This one will recursively convert all files in sub directories:
find . -type d | while read -r dir; do pushd "$dir";for f in *.wma; do ffmpeg -y -i "$f" -c:a libfdk_aac -b:a 192k "${f%.wma}.m4a";done;ls;popd; done;

And this one can do just one directory by running it in the directory you need
for f in *.wma; do ffmpeg -y -i "$f" -c:a libfdk_aac -b:a 192k "${f%.wma}.m4a"; done;

ffmpeg is pretty easy to install:
