Q: MacBook Air 2013 (Intel HD Graphics 5000) doesn't play some mp4/h.264 file in QuickTime - black screen, sound only

After MacBook Air 2013 (Intel HD Graphics 5000) has been upgraded to macOS Sierra I can't play some mp4/h.264 file in QuickTime player.

During the playback I see black screen and hear sound only but VLC player can play it without a problem.

My friend with MacBook Air 2014 (HD5000) has the same issue.

Did anybody face with the same issue on MacBook Air with Intel HD Graphics 5000 ?

Yes, the free VLC player plays these as expected.

I don't believe that QuickTime supports the full mp4 specification. Good that VLC works for you.

Agree but my iMac with Sierra can play these files in QT ....

No, I don't install additional codecs to macOS if QT doesn't play a file I use VLC.
But it's strange way QT cannot play a file encoded by H.264 and AAC ....

Well since both Macs are running Sierra and your iMac can play them, that doesn't seem to be the issue. Not sure what is at this point. You could try restarting in Safe Mode which clears some caches and settings then restart normally.

I did reset SMC, NVRAM, restarting in SafeMode but it didn't help ...

I do happen to have a 2013 MBA running Sierra. I can check it at some point but someone else may have an idea in the meantime.

These are just MP4 files?
