Q: what should I do about popup saying: CoreTelephony Trace file error

it says Error opening file/tmp/ct.shutdown, err +Operation Not Permitted

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

    Try this & let us know...

     

    Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

     

    (Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)

    I did kind of what you said, except there was no place to Repair Permissions,.  There was an option for "first aid", but nothing about permissions. I used the first aid and ran it on the drive. then rebooted and the error message still came up.

    Ah yes, sorry, they removed Repair permissions.

     

    In Finder do a Get Info on the /tmp folder at root of the Disk, what rights does it show, & is it locked?

     

    In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/". (no quotes)

    I am having trouble figuring out where  to find  the things you mention. I am SO sorry I have not had an Apple very  long and learning has been difficult to say the least.

    I opened Finder and then got lost…

    what is noticeboard? That's what shows up when I go to folder /tmp

    There  is a picture of a closed lock at the bottom of the
    "getinfo" on noticeboard. Is that where you mean to look to see if it is locked?  up further there is a square  before shared folder and a square before Locked. neither is checked.

    So there isn't a ct. shutdown in the tmp folder?

     

    open Terminal in Utilities, paste this in to get the space between cd & then press enter...

     

    cd /tmp

     

     

    Then enter this & hit enter...

     

    ls -a

     

    im24% cd /tmp

     

    im24% ls -a

    .launch-YmaK91launchd-297.lEzca6
    ..launch-diBV6Gssdfanctrl
    launch-MfKvO7launch-fTEWhm

    I did that up through the Is -a, but after I entered the rest, it just said either command not found or no such file or directory or this: 

    ./noticeboard/com.apple.noticeboard.notification.sierrafor10115and6.1.0.bundle/l aunch-YmaK91launchd-297.lEzca6

    -bash: ./noticeboard/com.apple.noticeboard.notification.sierrafor10115and6.1.0.bundle/ launch-YmaK91launchd-297.lEzca6: No such file or directory
