Q: Old iMac vs New iMac

All Mac people smarter than myself!

I'm about to upgrade and want some final reassurance that it's the correct move!

I currently have the 2.66 Ghz Intel Core i5 - 27" Late 2009 Currently Running 6gb Ram, still on Lion.

I'm thinking of buying the 21.5" @ 1.6ghz and upgrade to 16gb Ram (though I'm quietly annoyed that I have to do this now; I'd rather do this in 3 years).

I'm not interested in going with another 27", we're good with the 21.5".

My intention of this is that this Mac will last us for at least another 6+ years (the 27" has!) with the hopes that if I buy a new system, and upgrade the Ram to 16gb, it will be able to keep up with the software for those same 6+ years.

Our basic needs for the computer are email, internet, media storage for AppleTV, Photos app / sorting.  Won't be doing any photo editing, music editing, but might do some light iMovie.

That being said, I was about to buy it tonight and at the last minute ran a quick comparison between the two

I used "everymac.com" and selected the two.  When I actually looked at them side by side, my perspective was that there wasn't much difference…….I'd hate to spend $2,000.00 if there is a more financially responsible way.  But again, I'm thinking long term, and I don't know if though they say close to the same specs, who's to say that 2009 technology is equal to 2016 technology.

Basically, I'm looking for a Mac Geek to tell me that it is a sound investment and that our performance will be good for a good few years.

Thanks!
