Q: Music not on my iPhone playing?

On the Music app on my new iPhone 7 Plus, I am frustrated and ANNOYED!  What is up with the downloaded and not downloaded music?

I have a very limited list that's actually downloaded onto the phone (came from a 16GB).  When I am connected to wifi I get these bizarre songs playing that I deleted a million years ago from my very first iPad.  Back in the day I think I may have put some setting on to sync music between devices but I can't find it.  Where are these songs playing from?  I turned on my old iPad and went through all the settings (not many to go through) and found the iTunes Match but that is unchecked.

My iCloud doesn't seem to have settings either.  I also see that music is not listed as an option nor is it listed as taking up storage.  I have a few MB for contacts and documents and only a 600 MB backup and that's it!

Oh and I am not subscribed to Apple Music nor will I ever be until streaming mobile data is cheap/free.

How can I get rid of this crappy old library of music??

Do you use the same iTunes for both and use WiFi sync on the iTunes?

I did use the same computer and I don't think I ever put wifi sync on the iPad because it was a wifi only device and I hooked up often to swap out music, I checked the settings and that was not turned on.  On the Phone I never have used it for positive.  I remember when I got my first iPhone I was able to download and play songs that were on my iPad and that was convenient sometimes but I don't know what this is nor how to remove it.

I did some sleuthing and saw that the iCloud ID was put in on the Home Sharing option on both devices but not on my computer.  I removed the login but the extra songs were still there with the download option in my music app.  I even restarted my phone and double checked that Home Sharing was not signed in.

I turned Home Sharing on my computer for giggles and signed in on my phone but that is now a separate set of songs and my entire computer library.  These other songs are still there in the all songs section!

Hmm...  I think these are just my Apple store purchases.  How can I NOT play these?  They automatically play when I get on wifi and I don't want to play them.  They aren't downloaded because I don't want to play them.

I like to rotate my playlist so if I like a song I bought but don't want to currently play it on my phone, how can I not play it but not lose the downloads?

The music app in iOS 10 will automatically include all of your purchases in your library regardless of whether or not they are downloaded on your device. In previous versions it was possible to change this in settings. To listen only to the songs on your device, select Downloaded Music from the Library tab. If you don't want to perform this extra step each time you use the music app, you can hide your purchases that you don't want to show up on your phone. To do this, delete all the songs that aren't downloaded and they will be hidden. Hide and unhide iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store purchases - Apple Support

OK I solved my issue these songs were indeed my previous Apple Store purchases:

Hide and unhide iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store purchases - Apple Support

The fix in the above link worked for me.  It was annoying and took a long time because I had to go one by one, there was no mass-selection option.

I'm mad because there is no option to turn this function off.  If I don't have it downloaded on my device, I DON'T WANT TO PLAY IT!!  There should be an option, to turn off the auto play of non-downloaded store purchases if I want.  Everybody has made regrettable purchases and with me jumping on free music that's offered, I suffered in the end.  Thanks, Apple....  :-/

I did choose downloaded music and played from there but every time I get back on wifi it plays ALL songs rather than the list I started from.
