It is my understanding that the native camera app does not capture DNG RAW photos but rather it is a feature that app developers can choose to use in their apps so you can capture and edit photos in this within the app. The Photos app is more for storing photos to look at and the raw format is useful for more serious editing purposes. I know that Adobe Photoshop Lightroom uses this feature and you can search on the App Store to find other apps that do as well.

    hi, thanks

i did a direct download from the phone to mac (iphone 'photos & camera' settings on 'download and keep originals' instead of 'optimize iphone settings') into adobe lightroom and it only showed up as a jpg, about 2,3 meg per shot

a download via the apple photos app performed similarly

super not impressed that apple does not offer a switchable setting for dng, jpg or both in 'photos and camera'

The iOS app for Adobe Lightroom allows you to use the camera within the app and from here you can take raw photos. The same will be true for other iOS apps that have this capability. The photo needs to be taken within an app that supports functionality for this format, and the native camera app will not do this and will not store this format in your Photos app, so you can't simply import these images to your computer. You may find some useful information about how this works on this Macworld article.

You can let Apple know that you would like to see this feature here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
