Q: macOS Sierra

I have a MacBook Pro 13" (Mid-2012) 8GB RAM 750GBHDD

I have just recently updated my MacBook Pro to macOS Sierra from El Capitian (but I originally started with OS X Mavericks).

I'm trying to tidy my HDD as I have virtually run out of space with all the movies I have purchased.  I'm wondering if when I update to a new OS if the old OS still takes up space on my hard drive or is replaced by new OS.  Also, I suppose the same could be said for any upgraded programme that I have on the HDD.

I'm not very confident in deleting items on my MacBook unless it's documents or spreadsheets etc.

I thank you for your time and any advice or guidance that you could provided.

    - When you update macOS the files from the previous version are deleted and do not take up storage. One of rhe lat steps of a macOS update is deleting the installation files too.

    - That is generally the same for app updates. However, for app updates/install the downloaded installer is typically not automatically deleted and yo will have to manually delete them.

    - When you delete files make sure you also empty the Trash to free up storage.

    - To find out what is using storage try one of these apps:

In addition to the excellent advice provided by Illaass, I would add that your first step prior to beginning the project to regain disk space should be a full and complete backup of everything just in case something is removed in error.

Alway better to have a backup and not need it then to need a backup and not have it.

Thank you for your advice and for the post to be moved to the right forum.  It is the very first time that I have used the communities page to place a question.  Your time is very much appreciated.
