Q: Is it ok to keep both iPhoto and Photos on my MacBook Pro?

I have both iPhoto and Photos on my MacBook Pro. Is it really necessary to keep both or can I delete one of them?

Does deleting one, e.g. iPhoto, give more free space on the laptop?

Expecting your rapid reply,

Kind regards,

Did you migrate  iPhoto Libraries to Photos?  Not all items of an iPhoto Library migrate well, because the themes changed.  If you have books or calendars ib´n iPhoto, or added descriptions to iPhoto events and albums, you may want to keep the old libraries and the iPhoto application, so you can access these items, until you recreated them in Photos (see:  How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support)

Deleting the Photo application will free 1.7GB, the size of the application.  But deleting the iPhoto library will not free much storage, because the photos you migrated to Photos are hard links to the photos in your old iPhoto Library.  A photo you migrated from iPhoto has to be deleted both from the iPhoto Library and the Photos library, before the storage will be released.

See: Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support

If you are sure, all photos have been migrated correctly from iPhoto to Photos and you do not need to access old books or other projects in your iPhoto library, make a backup copy of the iphoto Library and the iPhoto application, and then you can delete both.
