Q: safari starts automatically when not configured to

I use firefox as default browser. a few days ago, when the system is booted up, both firefox and safari start. neither is set up to start on boot and the box on restarting apps on shutdown is not checked. the boot completes and watch the dock and about 5 seconds later both start. FF is set to stay in dock and S is not configured to do anything from the dock.

The system is a 13-inch, early 2014 macbook air. it is at 10.10.5.

I would like to update to sienna, but hesitate with this problem

Thanks for any help...

Denny

Start up in Safe Mode, restart normally and test.

Dominic23, I tried starting in Safe Mode. Doing this brings the system up OK, neither Firefox or Safari start. This is the way it should be. When I go back and restart in normal, then as before, about 5 - 7 seconds after the dock can be viewed, both browsers start.

This is a very vanilla MacBook. It is my wife's. There are no additional applications installed other than Microsoft office, adobe, Garmin interface to GPS and Canon for the printer. All this has been on for a long time and no recent updates.

Try running this program in your normal account , then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

There is so much 3rd party software installed, it is hard to impossible to determine what might be the cause.

Uninstall Bitdefender. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit.

You will have t do this after starting up in Safe Mode to prevent adware

from interfering with the removal of adware .

    1. Shut down the computer.

Press the power button. Immediately after you hear the startup sound,

press and hold the Shift key.

The Shift key should be pressed as soon as possible after startup,

but not before the startup sound.

Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo on the screen.

Startup will take longer than usual.

Screen flickering is normal in Safe Mode.

Login to your account. Launch Safari.

        Enter this address       https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/

        in the Safari address bar.

Download,   Install , open,  and run it by clicking “Scan”  button   to remove adware, if present.

        Once done, quit MalwareBytes.

    2. Safari > Preferences > Extensions

        Turn all extensions off

or  uninstall all extensions you haven’t installed knowingly.

    3. Safari > Preferences >  Search > Search Engine :

        Select your preferred   search engine.

    4. Safari > Preferences > General > Homepage:

You have what I believe is the worst VSearch infection I've ever seen.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac will remove it, but not the current release version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac. We have a beta with a more powerful engine that will get rid of it, however. You can find that beta here:

    https://forums.malwarebytes.org/topic/188888-announcing-anti-malware-for-mac-125 -beta/

Fair disclosure: I work for Malwarebytes, and the link I have provided goes to a page with other links that promote Malwarebytes products.

Thomas, the malware app pulled out a bunch of stuff (highly technical term). One other suggestion had me run your malware app but I think it was current and not beta.

So if I purchase the anti malware -exploit package, when will the beta that fixed me, be out?

Is this a legal conversation here? If not I can give you my email.

    Thanks...

On the Mac, there's actually nothing to buy. Our only Mac product for consumers is currently free, and that app will always be free. We'll have some other offerings in the future for the Mac that won't be free, but we are committed to the belief that every person is entitled to a malware-free existence, so we'll always have a free offering.

    Hello dennyjd01,

EtreCheck can delete all of those files. Just click on the "[Remove]" link to delete the adware. You can also click on the "[Check files]" link to remove any of the Unknown Files.

However, in this case, I suggest using that beta version of MalwareBytes first. To use EtreCheck, you will have to click a checkbox 158 times for each of those files.

After running MalwareBytes, you can post a new EtreCheck report to make sure it removed all of those files. If there are any left, it would help Thomas with the beta version of MalwareBytes to see what, if anything, it missed. You could then use EtreCheck to remove them.

And finally, I agree that BitDefender isn't doing you much good. That is an impressive EtreCheck report - most impressive.

EtreSoft, I will run your software again to insure that everything was removed. I did run the malware twice, the second run was clean.

I am puzzled about BitDefender. I have been running it on this Mac for over two years and have not seen any issues. Malware did not find anything on it. After a year on my Mac, I installed BitDefender on my wife's (the one with the problem) Mac. The first time I ran it, it spent an hour or so finding adware/malware. Maybe it did not find it all?

I will run Etresoft on both and post here.

    Thanks again for the help...

Here are two runs - one on my Mac. Never had a problem and seems clean now.

Bottom run is from my wife's - the one with the problem. There are still two daemons that are questionable.

outhiss and rhinologic. Maybe rhino logic showed up with our great campaign - rhino - republican in name only. Neither shows up on google. Unless I get other feedback, I will earse them.

    Hello again dennyjd01,

Yes. Those are both adware. On this machine, BitDefender or some other app may have partially removed them. They are both in a "failed" state, so they aren't running. But they should probably be removed to avoid confusion in the future.
