safari not working after sierra update

I updated to sierra and now I am getting a message saying "can not connect to apple ID server" and also I am not able to connect to the internet via safari or firefox. I have ran diagnostics which says that I am connected and all is in working order. Also, I have no issue connecting to the internet with any other devices. I have checked to make sure there are no boxes checked in the proxies based off of a recommendation from another thread. No boxes were checked. I also restarted in safe mode per another thread and I am able to connect to the internet and log in to my iCloud account. However, there was no further directions on what to do if safari worked in safe mode. This is very frustrating. I hope someone is able to help.

Check for the presence of any non-Apple Internet Plug-Ins that could be contributing factors: How to use Internet plug-ins in Safari for Mac - Apple Support.

Also: If Safari doesn't load a page or webpage items are missing - Apple Support

and

Install and manage Safari extensions on your Mac - Apple Support.

Needless to say, if you are using any non-Apple "anti-virus" or "internet security" products, don't.
