How to find out if macOS Sierra recognizes a USB infrared dongle?

I have a USB infrared dongle used to support communication with a scuba diving instrument. The infrared link works fine when I use it with software in Windows 7 or Windows 10 under Parallels on my early-2015 MacBook Pro running macOS Sierra v. 10.12.

When I try using the Mac version of the same software directly under Sierra, however, the infrared link isn't working. Is there somewhere in the Sierra system where I can verify if the infrared dongle is seen by the OS and appears to be working properly?
