Q: 2014 rMBP 15' problem since Sierra

Hi,

I have a mid 2014 MacBook Pro 15 inch with retina, 512 SSD, 16gb, 2.8ghz i7.

Never had an issue with the device since purchase, until upgrading to Sierra. Upgraded on the day it was released, and it completed without any issues. Three days later the MacBook started freezing and shutting down on its own. No error on reboot stating it shut down due to an issue. Since then it randomly shuts down on its own all the time. I cannot get through an hour of work without it freezing on me.

Here are the details on what has been done as troubleshooting, with the hope that someone out there has an idea.

- Many many SMC resets.

- Many many Nvram resets.

- Complete reinstallation using Internet recovery mode. Meaning it download Mavericks as it's a 2014, the I upgraded to Sierra

- Reinstalled El Capitan from backup

- Brought it to an Apple Store and they reinstalled Sierra from an ISO and it performed well for a couple hours. As the issue does not shut up on any diagnostics tool, they do not feel it's a hardware issue.

- All diagnostic tools claim all hardware has no issues.

- All forms if disk scanning or verification claim the drive is functioning correctly.

- I also created my own USB Sierra key, and reinstalled from that, same issue.

- Installed Sierra onto an external high speed USB key, same issue

- Installed the experimental Nvidia drivers, same issue

- At times, it seems to be provoked by changing from integrated to discrete or vis versa

- Within bootcamp I noticed that the light sensor isn't working

- Within bootcamp the computer does not shutdown on it's own.

- Here is an interesting one, when on my henge dock, the compter will never shut down on it's own.

- If on the dock, screen closed, the computer is removed from the dock, not opened, put in my computer bag to go home, by the time I get home the fans are at 100%, the device is so hot it's barely touchable, and it's non functional until forced to turn off and cool down.

- The problem appears now with Mavericks and El Capitan as well.

- Within macOS safe mode the computer does not shutdown on it's own.

Any idea's or help is greatly appreciated!

Micah
