midi sustain pedal/foot controller?

ahoy all.

i apologize in advance for being clueless about this... here it goes: i have been using logic express 7 for awhile with an edirol fa-66 and it works great. however, i have only been recording via mics or line-in. now i have an old casio keyboard (ctk-530) that has midi in and out ports. i have run the midi out of the keyboard to the midi in of the fa-66, and it works like a charm. now, i would like to do two things and after perusing the forums, i am still lost:

1) use a pedal/foot controller of some sort to do sustain while playing the midi keyboard.

2) use a (possibly the same) pedal/foot controller to controller other parameters within logic, say the parameters of an effect, similiar to automation. for example, controlling wah parameters while playing.

i do not know if the same thing can do both. i figured for the sustain pedal, it would be something i plug into the midi bus that sends sustain commands. as for the more generic foot controller part, would this be a midi thing as well? i have seen the Behringer FCB1010 being mentioned..

i am sorry again for my confusion. would appreciate any help/suggestions/recommendations?

thanks.

In answer to #1: Typically, a sustain pedal plugs into the keyboard itself, and the keyboard sends the MIDI signals for sustain on/off. Does your Casio have an input connector for a pedal? It's usually just 1/4-inch guitar cable type connector into which you can plug a pretty cheap momentary footswitch.

ahoy emw.

thanks for the info. that confirms what i have seen around: most sustain pedals plug into the keyboard directly. unfortunately my keyboard is pretty old (~1998) but gets the job done. i am shocked it even has midi! it has a midi in, midi out, and a 1/4-inch jack for output, that is it.

is there any way i can get a midi sustain pedal that can tell logic to sustain via some midi message?? do they even exist?

thanks again.

Believe it or not, midi has been around since 1983, so it's not that surprising that your 1998 Casio has midi.

I don't think a standalone midi sustain pedal would have enough of a demand for a company to market them. Just about any decent keyboard made these days has a pedal jack, and the pedals that plug into them can be had for very little money. I'm sure you could find something at this place:

but for the price you'd be paying, you'd be better off buying another keyboard that already has the pedal jack.
