iTunes converted to mp3

I purchased songs on iTunes. Most converted to a mp3 format, but several only displayed "could not be converted because of protected files cannot be converted to other formats". Why? All the songs, by various artists, were purchased on iTunes and yet some cannot be converted to mp3 format.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Is there a reason you are converting them to MP3?

Make sure that both of the following are true: "Kind" is "Purchased AAC" and that the location of the file is on your computer, not in the cloud. Else it cannot be converted.

But if you need MP3s for your car, why are you even shopping at the iTunes Store? Buy MP3s from Amazon Digital Music or other source. They can be added to your iTunes library and play in your car, without any conversion at all.
