Cant add .m4p files to itunes library

Hi,

for an unknown reason all the songs that i did not buy on itunes store and were on my computer are in .m4p format and in a folder named "apple music". i can't seem to add any of these files to the itunes library (they just won't show up) and then can't sync them to my iphone.

i have other files in the "music" folder that are .m4a and nothing happened to them, they show up in the library and can by synced to my phone.

PLEASE HELP! im losing my mind over this stupid thing.

thank you very much

Apple Music tracks are protected. If you moved from one computer to another while you had an Apple Music subscription and simply signed in you would have seen all of the tracks you expected to see in your library, ready to stream or download, but those you had previously ripped would now be Apple Music tracks. Do you still have the old computer? If not then as you say you will have to rip your CD collection again. See Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy to secure your library this time.

Yes, your iPhone can contain a mix of store purchases, personal rips, and subscription content via Apple Music. If you have an active subscription to either Apple Music or iTunes Match then you either sync your device to your iTunes Library or have it connect to your iCloud Music Library. If you have an iCloud Music Library any content you add to the library from one computer becomes added to the iCloud Music Library and then available at any other computer or device. Crucially if the mechanism is Apple Music then the new copies on other device and computers, or the original if you remove downloads or have some kind of crash, will be DRM copies. With iTunes Match they will normally be 256k DRM-free AAC copies. Backing up your original local copies of anything you rip is necessary to make sure you can always go back to them if needed.

I suspect the method you used (or perhaps didn't use) to move from one computer to the other caused the problem. I would normally recommend using SyncToy for both the final backup on the old computer and then an initial restore into a new computer, as you are then set up for maintaining the backup going forward.

thanks for the quick reply.

1. i had a subscription to apple music. recently i upgraded my iphone to 6S, when i tried to sync my library to it an error popped up that said something like "can't download these serveral songs because of apple music and please turn on your music library icloud thingy". i did that, opened up icloud for my music on both my phone and itunes (read about that a lot) and still nothing worked. so i decided to cancel apple music (though don't know if that worked completly, because i have the 3 months free subscription). still couldn't sync music, read somewhere about reseting the library so i deleted all the songs (made a hard copy), when i tried to upload them back to my library - couldn't add the .m4p ones.

2. i think i have moved computers from the original ones, but for sure the songs never been m4p

3. by backup you mean the library in a different file type? that would be a no, for i will have to upload my CD's to my computer from the start.
