Q: computer hanging?

Over the past 6-8 weeks my computer has been hanging with the spinning ball at times. It is becoming more frequent. Most of the time it is when I am doing the USA Today crossword. Usually it will resolve after a minute or so but sometimes goes until I close/restart Safari. (I wait about 10 minutes, doing something else while waiting.) Twice it has hung from other programs with the only way out shutting down with the power button. Today a simple game (downfall) acted jerky like it does when I'm downloading something. I was not downloading and the activity monitor showed minimal activity. I have used more data than usual these past 2 months but that is so difficult to sort I don't know if it's meaningful. I watch it because I have a data cap of 10GB.

It is an old (2010) computer running El Capitan. It is usually shut down over night and always when away from home more than a day. I have Exceed service, a satellite connection. I connect via an AirPort/Time Machine drive.

Any thoughts? Have I become a bot? (Not to sure what that is but it's been in the news recently.)

It is probably running unix housekeeping on your hard drive -- daily/weekly/monthly -- if you don't let it run it gets worse -- eventually you can figure out monthly -- -- In activity monitor watch the disk activity window - as housekeeping will show activity when you are doing nothing (this may actually be defraging the disk - as I have noticed improvement when you just walk away and let it run..

If you have not edited top sites (and don't use them) - edit them - they refresh - and if still automatically adding - it can slow or freeze safari -- (Spolight is also indexing that information)

Automatic update downloads can also be an issue when you are not aware they are running.

Notcloudy, thanks. What do I look for in the disk monitor to know if housekeeping activities are going on?

I recall years ago, perhaps long before OS X 10+ learning that the Mac does some cleanup work in the wee hours of the morning. Can I be allowing digital dust to collect by shutting down my computer at night?

I once had "Clean my Mac" installed but deleted it on some advice I got here about another topic. I don't recall the problem now but can look it up if it could be significant.

I haven't used Top Sites, in fact don't know what they are. Is that the page of 12 mini desktops of recently used web sites? I see it occasionally but I don't know how I call it up. I get away from it by going to a specific site from bookmarks.

I don't auto update because of the data cap. I do it manually when I'm up late enough to use the "free time."

Try running this program in your normal account , then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

    Problem: Beachballing

    Description:

Beach balling with USA Today crossword puzzle. Occasionally with other sites. Sometimes self limited; sometimes have to restart. Once couldn’t restart and used “off” button. Other sites seem to go slower but not a major change. Been going on 1+ month and getting worse. Seems to be better past 3-4 days. ISP is slower also. Using Exceed satellite. Usually get 15-17mbs download; recently 7-9 mbs. Peak symptoms coincide with the recent denial of service attack.

The report looks clean to me.

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items.  Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

    Geoff

Sorry about the delay on this - if I go into this site earlier than 9pm it freezes the desktop to the point I have to shut down with power button -- good news this is the only site that happens on.

Since Tiger the Unix housekeeping was moved to when you wake your system from sleep - or when you start it up (may be only weekly and monthly).  About the only way you know its running is by checking the activity monitor disk activity for a lot of activity when you are doing nothing - on startup - wait for it to settle down.

If your system is slow to start (stays on grey or blue before desktop shows - and the desktop looks funny) open activity monitor - then walk away until its stable (you can move the monitor without it freezing for a period of time).

Housekeeping gets worse if you keep shutting down during it -- also if you shut down before disk activity has settled down (check activity monitor graph of disk activity - when it flatlines - system has caught up).

Safari top sites page comes up when you click on the icon that looks like small boxes - I haven't used safari in a while - on Snowleopard it was 9boxes --   you can then edit out top sites - this is hazy - and you have to do it this way - deleting puts the site in top site plist as a list of sites you don't want to be top sites.   Emptying the caches will only cause the top sites to refresh -- clearing top sites with the menu option resets them to a list apple wants -- anyway they are probably causing your data overage.    Slowness comes when top sites is loading a site you are loading with a book mark.

You don't need Clean my Mac anymore -- it was originally a substitute for those who did not want to keep the mac on overnight.

I did that. Now I can't get the crossword puzzle to load. It says I need adobe flash. I had adobe flash. I reinstalled it 3 times. Still no crossword puzzle. Everything else seems OK but with only a half hour of exploring I'm not sure about that. I haven't gone on to Linc Davis' protocol yet, done for tonight.

One more glitch. Mail won't download my mail. It's on the web site so I doubt it's a ISP problem. Is there anything in that cache I dumped that could do that? Or anything else I might have done in clearing history from Safari etc?

The crossword that won't load in Safari does fine in Firefox.

Short on time now. I'll be back later.
