Remove encryption from backups

I have a MacBook Pro with an external hard drive for Time Machine backups. The external hard drive is connected to the Mac wirelessly via an AirPort Extreme. The backups are encrypted. How do I remove the encryption so as to backup without encryption?

I tried what you said and it worked great. Except the backup starts up and runs for about 1/2 an hour and stops. I've tried restarting again and the same thing happens. I think what I have to do is to remove the external hard drive, reformat it, and set up Time Machine from scratch.

I can't thank you enough for the time you spent on this. I don't know what someone like myself would do without great people like you in the community. I will close the tread out and mark it solved, since what you directed me to do worked.

Ok, now you can uncheck the "Back Up automatically" checkbox to turn off Time Machine, as it is no longer grayed out.

Then you can re-enable Time Machine and get access to the [√] 'encrypt backup' box described in this illustrated article by the late James Pond:
