Hi,
I have a Macbook Pro 17" early 2009, 2.93 Ghz Intel core 2 duo processor, 960 Gb hard drive, 8 Gb Ram, Yosemite 10.11.6 OS and want to use it with 4K UHD external monitor.
What upgrades do I need to do?

No, the GPU is soldered to the logic board and can not be changed.

The 2009 MacBook Pro came with the Nvidia 9400M, it is soldered to the logic board.
the internal display has a max resolution of 1440x900, an external monitor can be run as high as 2560x1600
the laptop lacks a Thunderbolt port so an external GPU is not an option.
