iPhone 7 camera exposure issues

I'm having major issues with exposing images and videos properly with the iPhone 7. In most cases it severely overcompensates for bright light by imposing this dark gradient on top of my images. The iPhone 6 camera didn't do this. It seems like the 7 is trying to falsely lower the exposure by introducing a gradient on top of the image. These are two undoctored examples (screenshots from video).

Hi markhimself,

I understand that your photos and videos are coming out darker than expected. I know it's important to have beautiful looking images, so I'm happy to help you.

Does this happen no matter where you take the photos or videos?

While the issue this is listed for is different than what you've mentioned, the steps are still applicable:

Get help with the camera on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
  1. Make sure that there’s nothing blocking the camera lens. If you’re using a case, try removing it.
  2. Force the app to close, then open the Camera app again.
  3. Restart your device, then open the Camera app again.
  4. If your device has a front and rear camera, try both cameras by tapping User uploaded file. If you see the closed lens or black screen on only one camera, take your device to an Apple Retail Store or Authorized Service Providerfor more help.

Make sure that you've also got the latest updates installed on your iPhone:

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Cheers!

Hi Chris. Thanks for the response. Those troubleshooting steps are not applicable in this situation. Here's some more screenshots to better illustrate what's happening.

In the first shot here, I tap and hold on the sky (Where it's bright) and the camera greatly overcompensates for the brightness and falsely lowers the exposure turning the the whites to an odd grey color. In addition, off to the right you can see there's a strange black blob/gradient present in the shadows.

In this second shot, I tap and hold on the plant. I then swipe down to manually lower the exposure using the controls to expose the sky properly. This image looks good, and is what is expected. In addition, you can still see the details of the plant leaves on the right hand side of the screen as expected.

With the iPhone 6, if I were to tap on the sky it would adjust the exposure properly (as best as it could) and then I would just swipe up or down to adjust it to where it should be. With the iPhone 7 it just gets it completely wrong when trying to expose bright areas, and I need to focus/expose a darker area and THEN adjust manually to get it to look correct.

markhimself,

Thanks for the additional details.

Next we'd wand to identify if this is an issue with the software or the hardware on your iPhone. To do that, it's best to make a backup, then restore it and set it up as new. Follow the steps outlined here:

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups - Apple Support

If you continue to have issues after restoring it as new, you may find more information by using another one of Apple's support resources:
