It says to not Reset, if the screen says "Do not disconnect" when you have iPod plugged to a computer. That is true, but you said, "it is not connected." Therefore, that warning does not apply to your situation.

In your case, you may have unplugged it while iPod's screen said "Do not disconnect." So it became stuck and unresponsive. If iPod's screen says "Do not disconnect" while iPod is connect to computer, you need to Eject iPod in iTunes (and wait for screen to say "OK to disconnect") before physically disconnecting iPod. Failure to do so may cause data corruption on iPod.

The Reset procedure should have worked; it's a standard procedure that you should remember, because the iPod will occasionally become unresponsive.

I left it by itself for about 12 hours (while sleeping) and this morning it was OK.

By letting it sit (with screen ON showing that message) for about 12 hours, you let iPod's battery run out of power. The iPod therefore powered OFF by itself. When you connect it to power in the morning, it started up normally. Glad to hear that it's working normally.
