Apps open and close immediately
when I open an app from the home page, the app tries to open but rather than open it goes back to the home page. Many times I have to try to open a few times before it opens.

Try these couple of things. Double tap the home button and flick the preview for all your open apps up and off the page. Then single tap on the home button or home page preview to exit the mode.
Then force your iPad to reboot. Hold down the sleep and home keys for 20 seconds or so. When you see the silver apple, let go and let it reboot then try again.
Force quitting apps and forcing a reboot can often clear up litttle glitches that are preventing a normal app opening.
