In iPhone SE, cannot remove image of a deleted book in iBooks

I downloaded several books onto my iPhone in iBooks. These include an older version of the iPhone User Manual and the latest version. I removed the older one (or thought I had removed it) to free up some space on the phone and to prevent confusion with the up-to-date iOS 10.1 one, but its picture still appears in iBooks. If I click it in trying once more to remove it so as to avoid confusion with the new one, it downloads again. How can I remove the misleading picture?

To add to the above: exactly the same turns out to be the case on my Mac (I sync by means of iCloud). There seems to be no way of getting rid of the image of the unwanted book on either device. This is a nightmare!

Yet one more addition. I found an Apple document saying that books cannot be removed from iCloud, but can be hidden. I followed instructions, but the procedure had no effect. The obsolete manual is stil viIsible, both on the Mac and the phone.

To continue answering myself, I have now discovered that the Apple document mentioned above must be obsolete, but that on the Mac, in the toolbar at the top of the iBook window, under 'View', I could hide the unwanted book. Phew! But how to do the same on mi iPhone?
