macOS Sierra - Airdrop disappeared

I have a macBook Pro 15" mid 2014 and i updated to macOS Sierra about a month ago.

I don't use Airdrop often, the last time was probably when i still had macOS El Capitan. But last week i wanted to use it and it's gone, to say it simple.

I can't find it in Finder, nor in Finder > Preferences. When I search for 'Airdrop' in Spotlight, Airdrop is 'found', but only the icon and name appear:

User uploaded file

When I try to open it, I get the following error:

User uploaded file

It seems that Airdrop has been deleted from my computer.

I just reinstalled macOS Sierra, hoping that would reinstall Airdrop, but it didn't work.

My last resort would be completely wiping my hard drive and then reinstalling macOS Sierra, but that can't be done in the near future, as I also use this macBook for work purposes.

Does anyone have an idea how i could get Airdrop to be reinstalled?

Thanks in advance!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), macOS Sierra (10.12), null

I had the same issue exactly. Just bought a new mac book pro retina 13'' with touch bar and process advised upgrade after first reboot. Then airdrop disappeared.

I spend almost 1-2 hour with apple chat support.

Normal support, Senior support and even engineers couldn't bring me a solution.

I was waiting final reply by engineers since yesterday. Their offered solution is ''Re-install OS'' .

And they are asking this even without understanding if i am using TimeCapsule or have backup or any sensitive information stored on computer ? Or some activated license issue ?.. Its very wrong advice without asking any circumstances.

Then i found the solution by myself.

Open Terminal under Applications>Utilities folder.

First disable Airdrop by enter this line :

defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser DisableAirDrop -bool YES

Then activate it again :

defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser DisableAirDrop -bool NO

After from Apple icon click Force Quit and then choose Finder and click Relaunch.

Here we go Airdrop is back. Alternatively of Force Quit you can restart your computer too.

I write as simple as possible to help everyone who had this issue.

Thank you rhnlty ! It works !

I could not boot in safe mode (it gets stuck on loading bar for a while without actually booting)

I log as a Guest user and see that airdrop was working for the guest user. Then I tried your method in my own session and boom airdrop is back.

I am not sure but after restarting finder I think airdrop was not clearly visible in finder so I used Spotlight and search for airdrop and then it was back in Finder again.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities, michaelsoe.
From your post, it appears that since upgrading your MacBook Pro to macOS Sierra, AirDrop isn't available at all either in Finder or searching for it through Spotlight. I'll be glad to help you with this.
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up -- Safe mode will make sure your Mac starts up correctly. See if you are able to locate AirDrop while in Safe Mode. If there are no issues, reboot normally and test in your own user account.
How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac -- If you're unable to locate AirDrop while in safe mode, use this article to test another user account. Since AirDrop is part of the operating system, this will demonstrate if the issue is isolated to your account, or if it's system wide.

Let me know how that goes and take care!
