Teleport Software

Is anyone familiar with Teleport? It is software that allows one mouse and keyboard to control other computers as well. I am finding that especially after restart, it goes away on both my iMacs, one running Sierra and the other El Capitan. I have to go back to the downloads folder on both iMacs each time and click on the app (which doesn't live in the applications folder but in the privacy tab in the Security System Preference. It does remain in SP, but for some reason I have to keep clicking the app and then click to trust some other app even though I have set both to trust everything always. This is annoying.

Wondered if anyone knows how to fix this. Or maybe knows of better software to do the same thing and maybe even have the ability to drag windows, too, not only files and folders. I tried ShareMouse--terrible--and not free for dragging files. There's SynergyKM, but its website is so old I doubt it's compatible with Sierra. There are lots for PCs, but few for Macs. Teleport does not seem to have a website, so it's free but no support available.

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Just to add to this. I've been using teleport since Snow Leopard; the developer actually works for Apple. He was always 2 versions behind and after much urging he put the code in the public domain. So if you install xcode, you can just download teleport, compile it yourself and you have an app that you don't have to worry about signing nonsense. I have 3 macs; 2 El Capitan and 1 Sierra, and it works quite nicely. There are a couple of fixes in the github version (I can't recall what they were, but they were important enough for me to decide to compile it myself at the time). It compiles and installs without you really having to know what you're doing.

I mention all of this because I'm not using the version in the app store. The version in github definitely works and allows you to connect El Capitan and Sierra systems.

Can you put a pointer URL in as a Reply?

I am suddenly having a situation where if I use the Apple mouse, I can move from screen to screen both ways. But if I use my trackpad or trackball (my main pointer), I cannot get to the second Mac. In the past, if I double clicked on the Teleport icon, that has fixed it, but now, the preferences come up, and if go to Settings and check version, I get an error message that says "An error occurred in retrieving update information. Please try again later." But later does not help. I have to click "cancel update." I do have 1.2.1.

I don't know if this is relevant, but when I look at the folders on the second computer under Shared, there is only one folder listed, and it is not my home folder. But that may only be relevant to sharing on the two computers and not Teleport.

Does this seem like a situation that would be helped by changing the Desktop picture? Just days ago, my other pointing devices worked both ways. I thought upgrading to 10.12.5 might help, but it did not. Isn't it weird that the Apple mouse would work and the others won't? I have never had quite this problem.

I get the check version error too - I'm pretty sure that this is simply because the site the version checker tries to connect to no longer exists. This has no consequences on operation of the app.

You are correct about the shared items this only determines what folders are accessible from another computer.

My desktop Magic trackpad works (including gestures) as well as my mouse. I don't know why your trackpad and trackball have stopped working - I would think it must have something to do with how they are configured. If you move the cursor to your other computer using the mouse can you then move the cursor with your other devices?

It would be easy enough to try changing the desktop picture but I doubt that it would help.

Every day presents a new challenge with this app. Today, the Apple mouse will not work either. I was trying to follow through on your question, but cannot do it. On each computer, when I double click the Teleport icon and the Layout screen comes up, the other computer is black--whereas when it's working, you can see the desktop picture of the other computer in that layout. Any suggestions now that the situation is even worse?

I don't see how the configuration of the trackpad and trackball can be the cause simply because they both have worked in the past without any change in configuration. This disconnect happens on a regular basis. Teleport will be disabled for a few days and then, for no apparent reason, it works again. I never know when it is going to be totally dead. I went ahead and upgraded both iMacs though I been holding off specifically due to worries about Teleport.

I thought I had mentioned this before, but maybe not. Teleport is not in my Applications folder at all. I do have the latest version that presumably is supposed to be, but the only place I see Teleport is somewhere in System Preferences. Not at the bottom but some tab like Privacy or Accessibility. Consequently, I cannot choose it for automatic log in as I can any other application.

Most curiously, as soon I posted my question last night, Teleport started work again. I still have the black computer icon for my main computer on the secondary computer but one my primary computer I see both desktops in Teleport. I did not post again last night because I assumed it would become dysfunctional again, as it always does, but it is still working this morning. I don't know if it will make any difference, but I will uncheck version checking.

I wish it were a regular application. But I think I can safely say I do not have two copies installed.
