Problems with Google Images

Hi,

I'm on an iMac Running 10.9.5 and Safari 9.1.3. All of a sudden, this evening, when I tried to click on a pane in Google Images, I noticed that the pictures were unresponsive. More specifically, they don't expand or show the links to view images or go to the site. I tried all the usual fixes: resetting Safari, quitting the program, restarting the machine, but no luck correcting the problem. All is fine on Firefox. Any help would be much appreciated.

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), null

1. Safari > Preference > Advanced

Checkmark the box beside "Show Develop menu in menu bar".

Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.

Click “Develop” to show the dropdown.

Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown and test.

2. Make sure that “Disable Images” is not selected.

If you see a checkmark beside “Disable Images”, click on it to remove it and test.

3. Click on “Disable Extensions” to temporarily disable extensions and test.

To enable extensions back click on it to remove the checkmark.

To uninstall any extension:

Safari > Preferences > Extension

Select the Extension and click the “Uninstall”button.

Hi Dominic,

Thanks for weighing in. I tried all, but no luck. My develop bar didn't include a "Disable Extensions" option, perhaps because I'm on an older OS. But there was an on-off button in Extensions tab of Preferences which I tried. I should add however that I don't have any extensions. I also assume that a reset empties my cache, though I tried it this way as well. Disable Images was not checked.

Some more info that I gleaned today: the problem seems to be intermittent. Don't know if that changes the picture at all--no pun intended.

I have reported to both Google and Apple, but am not sure how far that will get me.

Any other ideas you might have would certainly be welcome.

Thanks Eric,

So tried all here except the advice in the last link to reset the DNS cache and the location. The instructions seemed a bit imprecise in places, and I'm not sure those two moves speak that closely to the nature of this problem, but perhaps others would disagree.

No change after taking these steps.

As mentioned in my other reply, one thing I've found out is that this is intermittent. Does that change your impression at all?

Sort of unrelated question. How do I edit my original post to reflect this? I can't find a button for editing.

Regards.

Thanks Eric. Seems odd that you can't edit, but I guess we have to take what we're given. Anyways, any sense on how to proceed with this? I'm running he same thread in Google forums, but have found out nothing. Does the intermittent a nature tell us anything? I've tried reporting to Apple and Google, but get the feeling they won't do much.

Same problem here.

Safari 9.1.3, Macbook Pro 8,1, OSX 10.9.5.

With any google search, when clicking the "images" tab in the search results, I get completely unresponsive images. They don't link to anything, no longer expand to a preview pane, etc. When I open the image link in a new tab (command-click), it opens to a dark gray blank page ("Google Image Result for http://....") with no images displayed.

All third party extensions disabled, no anti-virus software. Tried all the usual steps, as well as those above, to no avail.

Chrome works fine.

Yep, same issue here. Updated Safari to 9.3.1 last night and now google image thumbnails are unresponsive. Same issue does not occur in Firefox. Am still running Mavericks as an OS purely because I use laptop for DJing with Scratch Live and Serato DJ which I realise is ancient but every time I think I've left it long enough that compatibility bugs will be ironed out and decide to update, Apple releases a new OS and I decide to wait again.

Followed earlier advice about options on the Safari/ Develop menu and had no luck whatsoever - though like previous respondent the 'disable extensions' option did not show on the menu (presumably because I'm not running Sierra or El Capitan) but then, like the previous respondent I don't have any extensions either anyway.

Over on the Google Thread for this, a couple interesting notions: one poster noticed the problem started occurring after an Acrobat Reader update. I vaguely remember having done the same. Someone else mentioned that, sometimes, Apple quietly makes changes like this to drive people towards the new OS. I certainly hope that's not the case. Apple, anything you want to tell us?

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

My guess is that its related to recent Apple updates. This is happening on my iPad. I keep getting notices trying to force me to update. The problem I have is that every time I update IOS my performance drops, so I've quit updating. Now Apple does something like this.

Its definitely an Apple issue. If I open a Puffin browser, it works fine. Its only in the Safari browser that Google images has quit working.

I'm having the same issue on all of my devices that use safari. On my iPad and my iPhone google images will no longer expand images or navigate to images in safari. Also text boxes have stopped activating the keyboard. I have not updated any software on any of my devices recently and have not allowed any auto updates. - This is a copy paste from my gmail.
