Chinese input in Sierra not working

You're not helping. We want to know what went wrong and resolve the issue. What's the point of asking for help here when the answer we get is to reinstall OS, which is ridiculous. Hope you get my point. Thanks.

I think this is definitely a bug.

I did a clean install; downloaded Mac OS X HS from App Store… created a USB boot disk) wipe the drive clean (format) and install Mac OS HS and manually install all the Apps. Only used Time Machine to import iTunes, Photos and Documents; none of the previous USER preferences were transferred.

After it the clean install Chinese Input works fine.

I was off for few days so I decided to shut off my MacBook to conserved some energy…

1. Today, I restarted my Mac and Chinese Input disappear again (Preferences à Keyboard).
2. To remedy this, I went to Preferences à Language & Region à and added Chinese to Preferred languages to the top (above English) and restart my Mac.

All in all, Chinese language has completely disappeared from Language & Region and Keyboard.

So, I think this is definitely a bug.

Just for clarification. Before powering off my MB for the long weekend I updated

Visual Studio Code to the latest stable release and performed Daily, Weekly and Monthly Scripts maintenance (OnyX) before shutting off.

Anyway, just want to keep you all posted.

I'm facing the same issue and was very frustrated as I needed to complete some urgent tasks.

I gave up and just went ahead and install Sogou pinyin (something that I've been using for years while on PC). Google "sogou pinyin" and it will be the first result.

Figured this is quicker than waiting for the bug to be fixed.

Could you clarify the nature of your problem? Much of this thread concerns a bug in Apple's handling of self or third party input methods with the .inputplugin extension. Are you trying to use one of those?

If you are having problems with one of the IM's provided by Apple, please provide details, as these work fine for most users, so that fixes are with the local install.

Even when fixed, many users prefer one of the alternatives:

Same issue here.

after updating from Sierra the Chinese Input Sources disappear. I even went to System Preferences --> Keyboard --> Input Sources and could not add Chinese input at all; it simply cannot be found on the list showed.

FYI: Uninstalling and installing is not feasible since it takes too much time.

What is your plan for inputting Chinese if that is the only way to fix your problem?

Try setting up a new user account and see if you have the same problem when logged into that.

Thank you for the wonderful advice.

Creating a new account does work. So I'm guessing it must have to do with Mac OS X High Sierra completing removing it from System Preference after updating from Sierra (Chinese Input was working fine in Sierra; just an FYI).

I haven't tried it. but, I'm quite sure it will fix the problem because prior to my clean install I did create a new account and the language issue is no longer present.

Anyway, I dove a little deeper and checked /Library/Preferences/com.apple.HIToolbox.plist and according to the plist, the Chinese inputs are present; I'm just going to wait for Apple to fix it.

Just upgraded to High Sierra a day before and experienced exactly the same issue of agentq, this is illogic that in "Open keyboard perferences" and Input Source to + , there has no "Chinese" for selection, don't even talk about input methods.

I tried to logout and create new login account, shut down and restart, change the language priority to Chinese (Hong Kong), Chinese (Taiwan) and even Chinese (China), but in Input Source, still without Chinese selection.

PS I suggest you also post your info about this in the High Sierra forum, since this one, for Sierra, is no longer relevant for bug fixing issues.

Did you try a safe boot? That may fix your problem.

I have the similar problem, I use Create and use your own input source to type Chinese from OSX Leopard to El Capitan, and it works fine, however, after I updated to Sierra, it is not working well, the number indicator inside the candidate window are all gone, I can't use the number key to choose the individual letters, this is so annoying for an iMac which can't do any simple typing work well. Dose anyone else has this issue? Any solutions for this case? Thanks!
