Calendar crashes on open - other apps crashing continuously

Since updating to macOS 10.12.1, Calendar on my Mac Mini (mid 2011) has been crashing on open and other apps have been crashing continuously. I don't know whether this is relevant but, the crash report shows this:

Application Specific Information:

dyld: in dlopen()

*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'Invalid parameter not satisfying: lockFilePath != nil'

terminating with uncaught exception of type NSException

abort() called

libcoreservices: _dirhelper: 660: mkdir: path=/var/folders/8l/nl7_38614fl74h9w_krrdpy00000gp/T/com.apple.iCal/ modes[1]=0700: Permission denied

Seems odd as the permissions on /var/folders/ seem fine.

A pile of background apps are crashing continuously most of which might be associated with Calendar:

AddressBookSourceSync

AppleSpell

CalendarAgent

callservicesd

CalNCService

DataDetectorsLocalSources

sharingd

soagent

suggestd

Have tried deleting the iCal preferences file with no change.

It's really odd as my iMac with much the same setup is not having these problems. So, it's something specific to the Mac Mini.

Any ideas ?

Hello Garry Brooke,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. I know having an issue with apps on your Mac Mini is not what you expect. Based on what you stated, it seems you may be having issues with apps crashing or being unresponsive since updating to macOS Sierra. To help troubleshoot and resolve your issue, use safe mode to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, delete system cache files, verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed. Log into your user account and test the issue while in safe mode and then restart normally and test the issue again.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up

You can figure out if unexpected behavior is related to a user file or setting by trying to reproduce the issue from another user account. This process includes creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.

Cheers!

Alex, thanks for this.

I did a Safe Boot and found that there was an additional background app crashing called "tccd". The other apps stopped crashing perhaps because Calendar was running for some reason and it had hung, instead of crashing properly.

What a mess. Anyway, I'm going to try reinstalling Sierra (using the full 10.12.1 installer from the App Store). If that doesn't work, maybe a clean install.

Cheers.

Thanks for that.

I did a clean install of 10.12.1 and all seems well.

It seems that there are some files and folders which users must not touch. Changing anything, including permissions risks stopping the Mac from booting, logging on or running a variety of apps. Especially, one must not touch /private/var/folders/ or any of its contents.

There is some good advice here: http://osxdaily.com/2016/01/13/delete-temporary-items-private-var-folders-mac-os -x/

Pity. Users and sysadmins really need an OS that is more bullet-proof than that.

Cheers.
