How to stop icloud download (sync) on Mac OS Sierra

Well looks as if I wasn't the only one with this problem. I accidentally clicked on a older update than i currently have installed and of course I couldn't STOP the **** thing! How irritating, one should be able to control his/her computer. Apple are you or are you not about letting us having control of our products we purchase from you? Once again it seems you limit our control and disable our ability to operate our devices efficiently and effectively. I'm as disappointed as everyone else that has already posted and like others have said hope that Apple pays attention to these posts!

Isa Apple making any effort to address this absurd phenom? Ever since Steve Jobs left, my favorite computer is slowly going in the toilet. I would love to get out of the Apple cloud if I could. I have experienced this for months now!!!!!

Somebody find a solution!!!! Quick!!!

Should have never gone to Sierra. I was warned!

This is so frustrating! It's incredible how such a simple feature that should work can give iCloud users such a huge headache. After hitting the download button by mistake I can't stop it by no means.

I opened my old iPhoto album that was 100% in the cloud. 30 gig is being download right now and I cannot do anything to stop it. Terrible. I don't even have 30 gig spare space on my hard drive - this will not end-up well.

How come the cancel button does not work, and this post has been posted about 1.5 years ago????

I saw all your replies and I'm an mac's user fro many years. Now in 2018 I realized that apple died when steve died.

Problems like this in apple there are a lot. Ridicoulous things that makes that users can't work well. In my opinion and my personal situation, This year I finish with apple because icloud *****, fotoapp ***** cause is a fake cloud storage, time machine ***** cause it takes almost a week to restore all my mac, and many more... The best option to have a good computer is not to buy a mac, sure. But if the media eated your brains like me you fell buying a mac.

What lame brain idiot decided that this was a "feature?" I've lost HOURS of time trying to figure out how to STOP THE MADNESS! Like so many people, the LAST thing I want is to dump iCloud to my MacBook Pro! Will breaking the connection to iCloud on a given device cure the problem? If I then delete items on my MacBook Pro, to regain my lost space, will it bite me later and delete off of iCloud files that need to stay there? I travel and offload pictures to my MacBook Pro for post processing. Now EVERYTHING is (pre and post processed) is being saved both places, and KILLING me!

I have the exact same issue - I went to open the main directory folder in my iCloud and accidentally hit the cloud and now the entire hard drive of my office computer is trying to dlowload to my laptop and there seems to be no way to stop it. And NO it does not work to hit the "I" and then hit the X to cancel it - the X is grayed out. This is insane that there is no way to fix this!

I have calmed down now, but I was obviously livid earlier. Telling myself to take deep breaths while I download 6.5 GB that I don't need to download.

You are welcome. It can get a lot more than simply frustrating at times.

I busted out laughing. Yes. People think I am against driverless cars because I am a Luddite. I tell them, "No, I have worked in technology Far Too Long to trust software to do anything right."

That's one of the new features of macOS Sierra -- Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support.

You could try to wait till it's finished or interrupting the download. If you choose the latter, then you may risk losing some valuable and important files/data.

How long has been at downloading?

You could try toggling iCloud Drive off/on.
