my keyboard sound touch does wrong things

Hi, dear helpers. My keyboard (macbook air) sound touch does not respond anymore. When I touch it the volume my screen goes backward (I have another screen). Both ➕ and ➖ touches are not reponding.... Help ! What could it be ?

From the same moment I noticed a few more strange disfunctinalities: my printer does not print (it does from other pc) and the the light touches: same issue. They don't light the screen anymore. Does anyone know how to restore all this ?

Thanks

MacBook Air (11-inch Mid 2011), iOS 10

Hi camelea6,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it seems like you are having trouble with the function keys not adjusting the sound not working correctly. One thing that can cause this is a setting you can change. For the printer not printing, there is an article you can look at. I would recommend you read these articles, they may be able to help troubleshoot the issue.

  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
  2. From the View menu, choose Keyboard.
  3. Click the Keyboard tab if it is not already selected
  4. Enable "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys."

Dear Alex,

Thank you so much for your precious help.

For my keyboard: I found out that the (FN) key is the source of the trouble. When this key is on a certain setting (don't know which exactly: it's when I press it 1x or 2x ) it allows me to use my general keys BUT not the top range ones (F1, F2, .... lights, volume, etc...).

When I push 2x this (fn) key its status changes and (fn) appears on the top of my screen (showing that the key is blocked) then my top range keys function well but not my backspace key....! To enable the backspace key to function again, I must keep pressing the (fn) key together with it.

So, the problem is really the (fn) key. Also, in the past, using this key was noiseless, now each time that I press it a little sound accompanies the key and its on/off status is now shown on my screen.

I followed your instructions as well: System preference/keyboard:

KEYBOARD TAB: both options are well on (Use F1, F2 keys .... + Auromatically illuminate keyboard...)

KEYBOARD SHORCUT: when I choose keybaord from the list, I can see that all the boxes are ticked - nothing related to (fn) key neither.

As for my printer (epson stylus 8400 series), it is a real mistery, nothing helps. I followed all your instructions, have cheked the updates, indeed app store suggested to update my printer - which I did. Since then, no improvements. I restarted my macbook several times (4 times in a raw each time), I still get 'error' each time I launch a print. My other old pc (acer) prints fine as usual.

This is the information of my settings:

GENERAL TAB:

Name: Epson stylus DX8400

Location: (my name)'s Macbook Air

Queue name: Epson stylus DX8400

Driver version: 9:00

DRIVER TAB:

Printer using: Epson stylus DX8400

Skip blank: off

Warning notification: on

SUPPLY LEVEL TAB: (it shows the ink levels)

UTILITY TAB: the little window indicates the status of the printer when I connect/disconnect.

I must say that in the past days I launched for first time the bluetooth (just to test it with my new Ipad). But now I have deactivated the bluetooth (it didn't work by the way...). It's now off in both Macbook Air and Ipad. I disabled the sharings that I had configured (files and printer). So, nothing is shared anymore.

Do you have any ideas on these two problems still persisting ?

Thank you so so much.
