Macbook screen goes black when charging

Hey everyone, I'm having some issues with my late 2015 MBP. After a few minutes of charging, the screen goes black. The mac still charges and the keyboard backlight is still on, but the screen remains black until I unplug the charger, wait a few minutes, and restart the computer. If I don't wait a few minutes, the mac boots but the screen remains black.

So far I've:

  • Done an SMC reset
  • Done a NVRAM reset
  • Tried different outlets
  • Cleaned the charger plug and magsafe ports
  • Let the battery drain completely

The charger and mac don't seem to be overheating.

I can't find an answer for this anywhere online so I'd appreciate any help I can get!

Remember there are TWO SETS of settings in Energy Saver -- one for battery, one for power adapter.

As an experiment, you should (while on battery so you can still see) change every setting for the energy saver (for Power Adapter) and save changes. then test and see if it is just a clobbered settings file.

You could also restart in Safe Mode, where the absolute minimum number of extensions are loaded, and stored settings are NOT used where possible. Again, make changes and save them. Changes made in Safe Mode will "stick" in Regular mode -- that is what Safe Mode is good for.
