iPhone stuck on apple logo - will restoring delete photos from Apple Photos in the Cloud?

My 5s suddenly started acting weird today. Keys were slow to respond, apps opening slowly, apps refusing to update,etc. Finally it shut down and now it will only go to the Apple logo and then go black. I've hard rebooted a few times - logo appears for about a minute or more, then screen goes black again.

I have about 15000 photos in the Cloud via Apple Photos. If I restore the phone, would it delete all those? (I would surely think not, but then again, better safe than sorry, thus my question). I have a backup via iTunes (fortunately), so I can restore to the phone if I can get it to work.but I am concerned about those photos. I also have Time Machine backups.

Do I use recovery mode or DFU or?? Would appreciate any advice on how to proceed.

If you were using iCloud Photo Library, prior to this unfortunate circumstance with your iPhone, then your photos should be safely lodged in iCloud. To be sure, go to a computer and log into your iCloud account via www.icloud.com and check to see if they are there.

As for the hardware issue, my only suggestion would be to take it into your local Apple Store and meet with a Genius employee.

Now that I think about it, the photos are also stored on my Mac, so I should always be able to restore them to any device, I believe. Even if I delete a photo off of my iPad or iPhone and it gets deleted from the Cloud, it should still be on my desktop, correct?

If they're stored on the Mac (not in iCloud), then yes, you can upload it to iCloud whenever you wish. You are also correct -- delete a photo (stored in iCloud) of your iPad or iPhone, and it's ultimately deleted off all devices including iCloud as well.

in Photos, under Preferences/ iCloud, I have it toggled on to download Originals to this Mac. So if I delete a photo off of my Phone, will it delete the one on my Mac?

Yes, it will be deleted off your Mac as well, because that's how iCloud was sadly designed, i.e. as a syncing/mirroring service and not a true traditional cloud based/archival service. It syncs all of your photos/videos across all of your devices making them immediately available to you. Delete a photo or video on one device, and it's deleted on all devices.

iCloud also stores the originals to your photos and has a copy on the device.

But restoring the phone wouldn't delete all my pictures? That's different than actually going in and selecting photos and deleting them? Just want to make sure I'm clear on that.

Restoring from a backup, is putting the iPhone back to a previous state. If you had photos that hadn't been uploaded to iCloud Photo Library yet, then those will be lost when restoring from a backup.

The photos in iCloud and on your Mac should still be there after the restore.
