It is best to avoid so called "cleaning" products - they may clean so well that they also delete necessary system files.

Install nothing. Any non-Apple product claiming the ability to "clean" your Mac is a scam.

Excerpted from Effective defenses against malware and other threats:

Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up", "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.

  • Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
  • They generally operate on the flawed premise that a Mac accumulates "junk" that needs to be routinely "cleaned out" for optimum performance.
  • Trial versions of those programs are successful because they provide the instant gratification of greater free disk space.
  • That increased space is the result of irreversible destruction of files, programs, or operating system components normally protected from inadvertent alteration or deletion. The eventual result will be unreliable operation, poor performance and random crashes that may not become evident for months or even years after their use, when updates to programs or OS X are eventually released.
  • Memory "cleaners" that circumvent OS X's memory management algorithms work by purging inactive memory contents to mass storage, which can only result in degraded performance and accelerated hardware failure.

Find out what's wrong with your Mac so that you can fix it. To begin troubleshooting read below.

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that please read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac. The reason for creating a backup is that the symptoms you describe could be indicative of an impending hard disk drive failure, so securing your data is a primary concern.

Then, shut down your Mac and restart it in "Safe Mode". To learn how to do that please read: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up. Compare how your Mac works in Safe Mode to how it has been.

Then, restart normally. If the same problem returns, please read the section If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode for Apple's recommended actions.

Finally, you can temporarily create a new User Account, and log in to that account to determine if the problem also exists when logged in to that Account. To learn how to do that read How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. When you are finished troubleshooting, you can remove the temporary User Account by following these instructions: macOS Sierra: Delete a user or group. Before removing it, confirm you don't need any of the files you might have created in that Account.

Let me know what you determine.

Unfortunately, you have an incredible amount of adware installed. Either use the "remove" links in that report or go to malwarebytes to remove them:

https://www.malwarebytes.com/antimalware/mac/

After you get rid of all the adware, run the report again. If it's all clean (no "adware - remove") line items, then you should be ok, although I'd recommend that you consider getting more RAM. You are really running the latest OS on the minimum recommended.

Oct 30, 2016 9:21 AM in response to davefromtowcester

1) You have some components of Intego Anti-virus installed. It Has to go.

2) You have installed Trusteer Rapport/EndPoint Protection. It has never worked properly on a Mac. Remove it:

http://www.trusteer.com/support/uninstalling-rapport-mac-os-x

3) You have some Western Digital software installed--probably came with a WD external drive you once had. WD has yet to get their software for Mac right. It can cause stalls and overheating in my experience. It needs to go -- a modern Mac does not need it.

You recommend that, once I had cleared up my Mac, I consider getting more RAM as I am running the latest OS on what is now the minimum recommended. That sounds like a good idea.

My Mac has the 2 x 2GB DDR3 1333MHz DIMM installed as supplied on purchase. I have looked on the Apple web page relating to memory modules, but there does not seem to be either this size or speed of memory available now. it would be very helpful if you could suggest a compatible solution.

best wishes,

DavefromTowcester

Apple does not sell or manufacture RAM (they use third party RAM themselves). I can't speculate on how much RAM your Mac can handle since we do not know the model identifier/year of the iMac.

These are the two most recommended RAM vendors: OWC (macsales.com) and Crucial; depending on your location, check either one or both. They both have easy steps to determine your model/RAM needs and will include info re. the maximum supported:

https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac?_ga=1.54866539.1772581237.1477 924740

http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/memory-info?cm_re=top-nav-_-flyout-memory-_-us-mem ory

Edit: I forgot to look at your etrecheck report - your Mac is a 12,1, so here is the page for those:

https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2011/DDR3_21.5_27

depending on what you use yours for, 8 GB or more RAM (total) sounds like a good idea. You can leave your 2 x 2 GB and add 2 x 4 modules for instance (in the two empty slots) for a total of 12. Just an idea.

Dear babowa,

Thank you so much for that advice. As a silver surfer, retired for more years than I care to remember and dependent upon my Mac for everything from writing odd jobs, to photoshopping, online ordering and correspondence I value the sort of help that the Forum can provide and particularly the advice that you have given on both my slow running issue and now memory expansion. I used to be dab hand at perusing and understanding handbooks, instruction leaflets etc. on buying new products, but these days it appears that one is supposed to understand everything by some sort of osmosis. Thank goodness for boffins like you!

With my very best regards,

DavefromTowcester
