imac 5k cpu upgrade-after

In my 2015 mind iMac 5K I have intel i5-4590. Can I upgrade it to an i7-4790?

I'm after the warranty time, and so curious 🙂

Someone did it before: http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/imac-5k-upgrading-the-cpu-ssd-ram-with-pictu res.1832378/

I am not a hardware magician, I don't know the power consumption differences, but I thing apple didn't designed two architectures for i5 and for i7.

Very difficult, but possible, if the CPU is not soldered to the motherboard.

First, look up the specs of the i5 4590...

Note the TDP, and what generation, and the socket...

(84 watts, and 4th, socket 1150)

Now go to the i7 page, 4th generation processors.

I see a 4790, a 4790K, a 4790S, and a 4790T.

The "K" is unclocked, and has higher TDP.

The "S" is a low power, 65 watts, the "T" is for mobile devices, 45 watts.

I would use the "S", or the plain 4790....

Been having overheating problems on a few iMacs...

Hence the "S" processor recommendation...

My "speed up your iMac" steps are usually

First, memory

Remember, the iMac 11.1 can use 1333 memory if all existing chips removed (can't mix speeds)

16 gigs max for Core Duo, 32 for i5, i7, late 09 to mid 2011

Second, hard drive replacement. Moderately hard

I use Western Digital Black's or OWC's SSD

Make sure you use a 3G SSD in a SATA II, and 6G in SATA III...

11.1, 11.2, and 11.3 shipped with 3G drives, but have 6G controllers...

Stay at away from Western Digital Reds or Greens until the idle time is fixed...

Last, processor upgrade. Last ditch effort to keep using your computer.

Very hard, can be expensive for the CPU...

At this point, I buy a new iMac...
