IP address
Does my new iPhone have the same IP address as my previous devices?
Does my new iPhone have the same IP address as my previous devices?
Are you referring to Wi-Fi? The IP address is assigned dynamically by the router and can differ each time you connect to the network. The only thing that will remain constant is your MAC address.
Oh no, I mean the device IP(?) assigned by the cellular provider. I've had the same provider all along, so if I'm doing something over lte data will my IP address be the same as years before or is it different with a new device?
Cellular uses a different manner for identifying a device, but it will not be the same as past devices. What is it that you are trying to do?
Well, a while back someone had my iPhone ip address or claimed to rather. This was while I used a 5s and 6. Do what I want to know is would said person still know my device ip or whatever address at&t gave me, or has it changed since then so no one would have the IP address associated with my 6s(new device).
I'm not aware of any way someone would have had your IP address, but having it does not allow them to do anything with your device. Again, the identification number that the cellular carrier uses to identify your device is the IMEI and that is hard coded into each device. Each device is different.
I gave it to them foolishly. Okay so the IP address that populates in ipchicken or whatismyip, while not connected to wifi and using data, is different on each device? Apologies I'm just trying to understand.
While you are connected to wi-fi, that address is dynamic as I stated earlier. That will change each time you are connected to a network.
Okay, and what if I am not connected to wifi but am using cellular data?
Go to ipchicken.com & see if the IP is the same as the one you gave out.
Do the same thing on Wifi & when using cellular data - each one will be different.
An IP address is simply a way that networking uses to know where to send data. You iPhone is unlikely to be hacked by just knowing the IP address. It is very, very unlikely that a cell phone carrier will have given you a dedicated IP address for the phone. They normally have a 'pool' of addresses & you get a new one every so often.
Frankly you appear to be investing to much into IP addresses, they are not worth worrying about - you are far more likely to be hacked by spam, spoof email, malicious adverts or other junk on the internet.
I Likely am over reacting, agreed. I also see that I can obtain a new ip address by resetting network settings. Right?

Sort of - there are private (local network only) and public IP addresses (ones that can be directly accessed via the internet).
A wifi router will normally give you a local address. A cellular carrier will also normally give you a local address too. The router or carrier has their own public address that the internet uses to send data towards your device. The carrier or router translates between the two types.
IP Chicken will tell you what the public address is for the network provider or wifi router is.
When you reset the network settings it's a bit of a toss up - some wif routers will simply say 'I recognise that device, give them the same local address' whereas another device may simply give you a new local address.
Carriers are more wary about giving you a new address - they have thousands of devices to deal with & can't afford to hand new ones out all the time.
Whatever happens with your local address IP Chicken will probably list the same public address – you normally exit onto the internet from the same ISP or carrier unless you are roaming from one network to another.
That is far more confusing than I had hoped but I hope it helps 🙂
Thank you. I checked IP chicken using LTE data and it gave me one IP address, the Io reset my network settings and it gave me a completely different IP address, was this supposed to happen ?
It really depends on your carrier & their network setup. That is why 'script kiddies' who tell you they have your IP are best ignored 🙂
It's complex & varies across network providers. You may also see different public addresses when your service type changes e.g. LTE vs 3G, 2G, GPRS or other service types based on your locale.
That makes sense as I'm seeing different public addresses (the addresses shows in ipchic, whatsmyip) each time I reset my network settings. I've reset it twice just to see if it were some glitch error or something but no they are infact different address. I just thought it were interesting but anyway since the public address is different now I should be in the clear either way?
As important as having your IP address may or not be to a hacker, your device also has to have open "ports" for the hacker to exploit and access.
Having your IP address is but one piece of a puzzle.
If you are concerned, find your current IP and hit up one of the sites that offers to scan your IP address looking for open ports to gain access. I think you'll find there are none.
As mentioned earlier... the naive public gives away way more sensitive data than is ever gained by hacking.
The scam "wanna see naked pictures of <insert celebrity name here>? Click the link and enter your Apple ID and password." sadly works. : (
